Cat Scan

Cat Scan

I am a 22 y/o male who has had some issues with an enlarged aortic root. over the past 2 years I have had 3 CT scans (1 chest/abdomen and 2 chests). My cardiologist recently told me (after getting all the scans done) that I may develop cancer later on in life specifically from getting these scans done. He said that amount of radiation used is incredibly high and I was a bit annoyed that my doctors didn't tell me this BEFORE getting them done. I was wondering if anyone else has had a large amount of ct's at a young age and what to expect later in life as a result of this. Thanks for your consideration.

Hi.   I'm sending you three reliable sources of information which might be able to answer your questions about cancer risk from CAT scan radiation.  The first is from th US FDA, the other from the US National Cancer Institute and the third is an article from the New England Journal of Medicine.  The web pages are as follows:

http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/ct/risks.html
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/causes/radiation-risks-pediatric-CT
http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/357/22/2277

Hope this helps.
