Could this be cancer?

Several weeks ago I noticed that my left leg was significantly smaller than my right leg. On my left side down the shin bone there is a noticeable indent which is very painful, and it feels as if muscle has come away from the bone. This is not from strain or exercise as I am in a wheelchair, and it's not a blood clot. What could it be and what should I do?
