Elevated Ca 19-9

Hi.

My mother, 47 years old, had recently done a thorough blood test (1 month ago). The CA 19-9 level is elevated, which is 54.6U/ml.
Other tumor markers are within normal limit (alpha foetoprotein 3.0ng.ml, CEA <0.5ng/ml, CA 15.3 2.2U/ml, CA125 8.6 U/ml and EBV EA IGA -ve).
She is worried about gastointestinal cancer. Recently she complains of bloating, flatulence, and sometimes when she burps, some liquid with undigested food particles will come out. She also complains of abdominal discomfort. She has undergone colonoscopy last year and everything was alright.
Doctor advised her repeat the test again after 3 months.

CA 19-9 can also be elevated to other things besides CA:  Bile Duct Obstruction(i.e. Gallstones), Liver Disease, Pancreatitis.  However, since this marker is elevated it should be monitored very closely; every three months would be appropriate at this time unless her symptoms worsened and/or increased.

Secondly, any upper endoscopies done? (Upper GI).

There's no upper endoscopy done yet. She had undergone an abdominal ultrasound in Sept last year and everything was fine and there's no significant finding.

She should be definitely seeing a GI Speicialist and monitored closely with that CA 19-9 marker being elevated.  

Keep in mind, the US, Colonoscopy are NOT recent; alot can change in months.  Her problem sounds upper GI to me vs lower GI to me.

Thanks for ur concern and attention.

I have been telling her to see a specialist but she is just too worry to do so. She's afraid that the result turns out to be a bad one. She's now taking noni fruit, everyday, which she believes contains anti-cancer properties until 3 months later to go for another blood test.

I do know that Noni Juice is tasty, but there is no CONCRETE data that is prevents and/or cures cancer.

Secondly, hopefully she will become comfortable enough to see a specialist soon/before the three months.
