Extent of Skin Exam

Am male who had basal cell once on arm, father had melanoma, as did two uncles, and I am blue eyed, over 65, sunburned frequently as child, and was often in sun.  Have been advised that I should have complete skin exam, including where sun doesn't shine.  Dermatologist (female) reviewed skin with underwear on, biopsied three spots on arm and two on leg, but didn't examine under boxer shorts.  Is this something that should be examined or not? I have no problem with it, but don't know if I should be concerned about being checked at some point everywhere.  I can't see everywhere with my bifocals to do self-exam "there." Wondering if it's something that's not done in the "south" because of modesty concerns or because of new information in medical schools that says it's not necessary? Please advise. Thanks!

Hi.  Melanoma and other forms of skin cancer can occur even in areas "where the sun doesn't shine".  I think your doctor is just being thorough when she insisted on examining your entire body surface.  I think you should be thankful for your doctor's thoroughness.  Given your strong family history of skin cancer, it's better to have a comprehensive check-up, than to be sorry later on.
