Liver biopsy

Just how invasive is a liver biopsy.  I was just told that I have a liver tumor.  I have  already had a sonogram (not conclusive), then a CAT scan (dr. suggested an MRI), then an MRI.  Doctor feels 99% sure it is what he called it.  I will obsess over this everyday.  Is asking for a biopsy too much?

I had a liver biopsy about ten years ago and I was put out for it to be done.  They take a sliver to do a biobsy on but I hear if you do it without anesthesia that it is VERY painful.  I had a uterin biopsy without anesthesia and believe me, I almost came off the table because of the pain.  Good luck!!

Some liver lesions are benign -- you said your doctor is 99% sure, but what exactly did he call it? Did he say anything specific about the tumor?  In certain situations, biopsy may be appropriate, but in some instances it's important to know it can do more harm than good.  Did your doctor recommend against biopsy, or did he suggest one?

As far as the liver biopsy itself, if you have no bleeding issues it is considered a relatively safe procedure.  My husband underwent one a few years ago, and it was done with sedation -- he was not "out," but sleepy, and didn't feel any pain during or after.  Hope that helps.  ~eureka

Thank you for the info.  I have "Focal Nodular Hyperplasia".  I also have liver enzyme problems which is not connected to the above.  I may have fatty liver, etc.  I understand that can be attributed to my recent diabetes diagnosis or cirrosis (cirrhosis).  That is the guessing part.  I dont like that and from the research I've done, you can only tell what stage your cirrosis (cirrhosis) is in by doing a biopsy.  As to you other question, my liver doctor is not in favor of a biopsy.  I want to know for sure about the fatty liver thing.
