Medical Protocol

My mother got Ocular Melanoma  nearly 4 years ago. It started as simple cloudy vision. After she finally got in to see a Eye doctor (can't remember the professional name), it was 2 more months to see an surgeon. This doctor recommended placing a irrated disk behind the cancer that had lodged itself on the eye wall. It wasn't until 2 weeks later that the cancer had covered the retina and it was determined that removal of the eye was warranted. Mom opted for removal.
The cancer was determined to be contained in the eye. It wasn't until 3 years later that the cancer had spread into her liver. She was given 6 months to live but survived for only 3.

My question is it not the medical communities protocol for cancer screenings to be conducted where cancer is present or found in a person's body that has been subsequently removed?

Hi,
I am sorry to hear of your mothers history and outcome. Ocular melanoma is known to preferentially spread to the liver.
Depending on the institutional policy and practice, a follow-up schedule is usually recommended to cancer patients who have completed therapy.
