Possible Renal Cancer

Possible Renal Cancer

Good Afternoon, My 15 year old male cat has just been diagnosed with possible renal cancer. The ultrasound revealed that with the exception of one kidney being larger than the other kidney, all of his organs are completely normal. Given the age of my cat, cancer not being detected throughout his body and the fact, that I won't be proceeding with cancer treatments should my cat actually have renal cancer, I chose not to have a needle biopsy to determine definitively if it's cancer. I was told that while kidney cancer is a very strong possibility, it may also be that my cat was recently ill simply due to an infection. My cat's eyes have been very watery and runny the last few days. The oncologist recommended antibiotics and my cat was given an injection of two weeks worth of antibiotics. I was then sent home with Prednisone 5mg to give to my cat every second day. Pursuant to my vet's advice of one week ago, I was giving my cat half a Pepcid pill once a day. I asked if I should continue with the Pepcid given that my cat is now on Prednisone. The vet suggested that I not give my cat the Pepcid in order to better assess his response to the Prednisone. In that the Pepcid greatly improved my cat's overall demeanor and helped him to eat more, I would inquire as to whether or not, my vet has advised me appropriately in this regard. As well, given the low 5mg dosage of Prednisone prescribed and the fact, that his other organs are fine, I'm wondering if it's safe to assume that if my cat has renal cancer, it's in the early stages. Finally, on Prednisone alone, how long can I realistically expect my cat to live assuming he has renal cancer. Thank you.

Sorry about kitty. We just put ours down after getting an open abcess (abscess) on the belly. It was 16, and breast cancer. If cat seems to b feeling ok, let it go. When weight loss, eating, skin wounds that don't heal or peeing probs, let it go. Suffering is a selfish thing we tend to do. It was hard as hell to put kitty down, at the same time, the quality of life was none. I'm very sorry for your Baby.
