I'm a radiation oncologist and have had some experience in this area. The treatment of choice for cancer of the oral part of the tongue is usually surgery. But small such cancers can also be cured with radiotherapy. If radiotherapy is used, the preferred method in suitable candidates is implantation of radioactive material in the tongue. This should be done only by a radiation oncologist who has had a good deal of experience with this procedure. Whether primary treatment is surgery or radiation you may have to have external beam radiation as well. Unfortunately, external beam radiotherapy has very uncomfortable side effects, some of which last a long time. You should certainly see a competent, experienced, ethical otolaryngologist and possibly a good radiation oncologist too.
