Stomach problems with cancer

My husband has mesothelioma - a lung cancer related to asbestos exposure.  Since his open lung biopsy, a failed attempt at lung removal, and subsequent taking of pain killers, he has had problems eating.  I know that cancer is supposed to suppress appetite, but this seems more than that.  He takes five swallows and then stomach has spasms.  He has fluid build up due to mesothelioma. I suspect some kind of inflammation.  He has had his gall bladder removed.  He has a hiatal hernia and Barrett's Esophogas (a prescancerous condition that is under control as last checked) And he has had some success in fighting mesothelioma.  It is often  a very aggressive disease, but his tumor seems to be growing slowly.  I feel that if he could just overcome this eating problem he would be even more successful in fighting the cancer.  I'm thinking it is either the fluid or some kind of inflammation.

My ex and his dad both had surgery for a hiatal hernia.  My ex had spasms of the esophagus, and I've had them also in my life.  They are painful.  It happens when you drink, and eat too.  Food also gets stuck.  If his haital hernia is causing these symptoms, maybe he doesn't want to eat because of the pain it causes.
Is he on medication for this?  They gave me some sort of muscle relaxant to treat the spasms.  They were very, very painful.  Even swallowing sometimes would set them off.
I hope that your husband is eating better and gains his strength.
