complications of laparoscopic nephrectomy in elder

my grandfather (78yrs old) had his right kidney removed on july 7, 2010. he had some trouble with his strength right after surgery, but pretty typical according to his doctor. Now, 10 days later, he is still hospitalized in the MICCU unit (medical intensive cardiac care unit). Hasn't been responsive for a week now. Not in a coma, but not awake. His remaining kidney has not functioned properly, has had 2 dialysis treatments. Has infection due to the large amount of fluid that has collected in his lungs. He is not on a ventilator (as his wishes are to not be on any artifical respiration). He is receiving oxygen at 100%-on anti-biotics for infection and will be having one more dialysis treatment. The doctors cannot say what we should expect. He is coughing, but not bringing up any of the phlegm. They have to suction him manually.  I don't know what other questions to ask, as we seem to be getting different answers daily. The surgeon says all of these complications are "normal". His internist says there is nothing else that can be done-just to keep him comfortable. he is on morphine and sometimes sedated.

Well, I can tell you his condition is NOT TYPICAL/NORMAL after having this surgery.   Your grandfather has not done well with this surgery at all, which can happen.  I would have to agree with the internist.  I would say the prognosis is not good.  There MAY BE a SLIM chance he comes out of all this ok.
