decadron IV

decadron IV

When getting decadron intravenously thru mediport I've experienced sharp pain in the foot twice and once in the liver/kidney area.  Has anyone else had this?  Any explanations for it?  Is it a reason to stop or switch meds?  It occurs after the other premeds (benadryl, aloxi) and hydration (with lots of magnesium)

Hi.
There are patients who complain of pain with dexamethasone injections.  I had patients who complained of pins and needles sensation or warm feeling at the axilla, lower back, and groin area while being given dexamethasone intravenously.  But those reactions subsided after about 1 minute.  The cause of these reactions is not known.  There is no reason to stop the dexamethasone unless the reaction is severe and life threatening.  You should, however, report any drug reaction or side effects to your doctor or to the manufacturer.
