displastic nevi

displastic nevi

Recently, I saw my doctor about a mole that has been itchy, painful, and sometimes numb.  He suggested I come back so that he may remove the mole and do a biopsy.  Because of the experienced sensations, the unevenness in border and (very slight) pink discoloration on the border, he was concerned that it may be dyspastic nevis.  He has been on medical leave and is returning with a heavy work load.  I called in to report that a patch of skin above and including the problematic mole has also gone numb and is itchy.  Could it be that the mole is cancerous and is spreading or am I just peranoid?

Displastic nevi means that the mole is atypical but it is not cancer.  The mole has greater chance to later develop into cancer so it would be wise to watch.  I was diagnose in 1991 with Displastic Nevus Syndrome wich means that I have a large amount of Displastic Nevi. I have been followed every 3 to 6 months since and was told that I had good chances to have a melanoma later in life.  For me that came in 2003 where one was removed from my right leg.  After 2 surgeries, there was a clear margin and I didn't have to have any further treatment.  I was told that now I had 100% chances to have other melanomas ( I also have 2 family members that have had melanomas).

I must say though I am not concern because I am followed every 6 months by a great doctor and feel confident that the next melanoma will be caught early again and will not have time to spread.  Hope this helps and good luck!
