Hi.
Your father-in-law was diagnosed with melanoma through biopsy of the lymph node.
The next step in the management would be to look for the primary site.
Surgery of the primary site is the mainstay of treatment, with additional lymphadenectomy (surgical removal of involved lymph nodes) to prevent subsequent dissemination.  Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are added after surgery.
Please bring your father-in-law to his oncologist to discuss the treatment options.
Good luck.
