my brother was diagnosed with a brain tumor, so they did the biopsy, the doctors are not 100% sure, but he said he thinks it is cancerous, and now we are waiting for the results to come back. It has been one week and they say it usually takes two weeks.  I am praying that it comes back benign, but my question is why does it take so long, isn't there anything that we can do in the meantime, I mean while we are waiting it could be getting bigger, isn't there something we can do now so that he can beat this thing.  Also the doctor said that because of the location it is not a good idea to operate, I know I shouldn't expect the worse, but I want to find everything possible to help him recover.   They have sent him home from the hospital until the tests come back and then they will know what to do next.  He has started eating a bit more, he has been on liquids now because he can't eat solid food.  Each day he seems to be a bit better, has started sleeping more during the night.

Do you have any suggestions.  Also we live in Canada, can you recommend any surgeons or hospitals that you think can deal with this problem better then others.

My twin brother was diagnosed at 50 yrs with an inoperable brain tumour - took almost a year to diagnose.  He had vision problems, they thought it was a glaucoma, then said it was a sinus problem. He just collapsed one day, his son carried him to the car and took him to the local hospital. They did an MRI scan, obviously saw the tumour, wrapped all around his head, and sent him by ambulance to a university hospital in London, England. Some 2 days later they did a biopsy on the tumour, but it took some 10 days before he got the results that the tumour was malignant. The biopsy has to go to a pathology department to test the tissue removed, and it depends on the workload of the lab as to how long it takes to test.

From the experience of my late brother's problem, I am afraid it doesn't look too good at the moment and my heartfelt prayers and sympathies go out to you. if the dx is malignant.  As my twin, it was devastating to me, but no less so for you as a sister. This does not mean your brother's tumour is malignant. However, I have a very close friend who's brother was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour some 14 years ago (an ex police officer) and he is doing well today on meds, no surgery.

There is always hope, and I don't think a few weeks delay in treatment will make any difference to the prognosis. I was dx with breast cancer in 2003, waited a month for surgery, but my surgeon wasn't worried about it - cancer doesn't usually progress that quickly. I am doing fine tody.

My prayers are with you and your brother.
Liz.

thanks.  Do you know why a biopsy would take two to three weeks. this waiting around is hard.  He could be starting on his treatment by now, I am just scared that the longer it takes the worse it will get.

My brother is 56 years old, was always healthy.  He hadn't been feeling good for a while and doctors just dismissed it as a bad cold, then it got worse and then they said it was probably an ulcer -- finally his wife took him back and that is when they did a CAT scan and found a tumor.  He has been home now for a week, we are waiting for the results to come back from the biopsy.  He has been sleeping a bit more since he has been home, and eating a bit more also.  but still can only have liquids.  he can not stomach solid food.   I will look into the Cancer association for more information.  I still am praying that it is not cancer, but even if it isn't he will have to do something to shrink the tumor.
