non small cell lung cancer

My mom has non small cell lung cancer. Diagnosed a year and a quarter ago. She has carbo and gemzar, altima chemo. The tumors in her lymph nodes are now growing again. Is there anything I can do. I feel helpless, she is only 58 years old. I feel like the doctors are just using a chart and picking a new chemo, without any thought behind it. They were like well she has been alive for the last year, you should be happy. I am happy, but I want her to continue on please help.
