HDL and LDL

HDL and LDL

I am on 41 year male with strong family history of early CAD.  I recent saw a cardiologist.  My LDL was 80 and HDL was 50 with a total of 160 and an LDL pattern of A/B.  Also, my CRP =2.  The cardiologist put me on 10mg of Lipitor.  after two months, my LDL = 39 and HDL =34 with a total of 100 and an LDL pattern of B (closer to the A/B on the spectrum).  Also, my CRP =0.5.  My cardiologist was concerned with the decrease in HDL and wants me to try 5mg for 2 months.  What do you think?

I was surprised because I thought that the latest research shows the lower the LDL the better (jupiter LDL <50 was better than LDL 70).  I also thought that when you have very low LDL you need less HDL, so I thought that low HDL is OK in the face of very low LDL.  What are your thoughts on this?
