Hello Soniam,

Welcome to the Caregivers Forum. I am glad that you found us and took the time to post.

You don't offer a lot of detail so I am assuming so things here. Please correct me if I am in error.

The most important part of skin care for any age group from baby to elderly is cleanliness. After each incontinent episode you must clean the skin thoroughly with a good cleansing soap like Dial, Ivory or some type that does not contain fragrances. Dry the skin by patting it dry and not rubbing. I would then suggest some kind of a protective skin barrier like A&D, Vaseline or baby "diaper" products. You can discuss this with your pharmacist as he/she will have the best suggestion for these products.

It's important to clean and dry asap following each incontinence episode. Do not allow the skin to be in contact with bodily fluids any longer then absolutely necessary.

Try to see that the elderly person is drinking enough fluids so there urine is not so concentrated that it actually "burns" the skin. Sometimes cranberry juice can help change the PH and make the urine less caustic.

Also frequent position changes will promote better circulation and is helpful in promoting good skin turgor. By frequent I suggest every hour until the skin clears.

If this elderly person has open skin lesions it's best to consult a physician. I am not an expert and my suggestions come from personal experience.

I hope this helps and that you'll let us know if these approaches/suggestions are beneficial.

Best of Luck to You,
~Tuck

Sorry. What I didn't express above is my admiration that you are caring for a loved one at home. It can be very challenging and requires a lot of love, determination and dedication. It's not a challenge that everyone can meet.

No one can appreciate what a Caregiver goes through until they have been there. Be sure and take time for yourself. You have my support and best wishes.

Peace,
~Tuck
