Hello Tlc,

Welcome to the Caregivers Community.

Colostomy bags are generally changed about twice a day or when they are about 1/2 to 3/4 full. Don't let them get too full or it will be difficult to change. The exact time will vary from person to person. It depends on their bowel schedule, how much they consume and the like.

Precisely how to change the bag will  depend on the type of bag. It's important to make sure that they are securely attached. If in doubt you can either call the colostomy bag manufactures or if the person has just been discharged from the hospital you can call them.  If you live in a small town even the staff at Urgent Care or the ER will often at least they will in my area. We use to receive a lot of "how to" as well as "what to do" calls when in ER/Urgent Care.

You may also find it on line. Let me know if I can help. Send me a PM with the manufactures name and I will look on line to see if I can locate the instructions if you cannot locate them.

Good Luck to You,
Tuck

hello I've been reading some of the posts and read one that said you care for your dad. Do you still take care of your dad? The reason I ask is because  I care for my grandparents and would like to find a support group who understands.
