Exactly!! Mine are pushy too when it's time for that!! Bob is a large heavy (not fat, mind you, just a B I G cat) and will push Ed down when he needs to climb on his chest; Spirit will stare and yell at him. (We call her "Baby Bossy" when she's in that mood)
My CAT does it EVERY morning after eating and EVERY evening, again after eating. She purrs very loudly while She kneads. She has a favorite fuzzy blanket She like to do it on and She wants this blanket placed on my lap as She kneads. SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE WANTS AND SHE KNOWS HOW TO GET IT!! As kittens They knead at Mommy's breast while They are nursing. She's 5 years old now but like People, They (We) never lose the "Child within".
hey skippy 81-i used to be called "skipper" as my name is s kipp; and I graduated in 81!! what a coinky-dink. Bella sounds charming!!
Wynterchan-the 2 of our 3 cats the do the suckling thing will only do so w/my fiance-he has a biker beard-i think they like the feel of it on their paws while they go to work on his collar. If he's gone for a few days they seem to get frustrated and will come and give me a try but I don't seem to be as good as "the real thing" and they give up after a few minutes. Spirit's litttle fingers are sharp!! (Bob bites his nails down to nubs like his mother. Read: me)
All 3 of our cats knead and even suckle. They were abandoned when they were too young and not old enough to be weaned, so we had to bottle feed them. They consider me and my husband to be their mommy and daddy. They are happy, well taken care of cats.
My Bella has being doing this since shortly after coming home from the shelter. She was very sick with a virus and had just been fixed as well. I have a very soft green blanket that she claimed as soon as she got to our house. She is well over a year now and anytime I have that blanket she gets excited because she knows she gets to knead it. Every night when I go to bed she lays next to me and kneads my pillow. She will eventually fall asleep on her back while making suckling motions. It's so frigging funny. Never had a cat do this.
Ours do it-all 3. Butters will actually "ask"-if I'm laying on my side he'll politely tap my on my side to roll over so he he can knead on my belly (I guess ribs n'back bones aren't good kneadin') and purr and knead away for a couple minutes and then settle down for a nap. Spirit will do this on Ed's shoulder while "nursing" on his collar-Bob does this as well-my understanding w/the nursing activity in adult cats is they were weaned too soon. We got Spirit as an orphaned kitten from a shelter @ 5 weeks and had to wait a week to get her then, and Bob is just super-affectionate. In my house, this activity is a sign of a happy, relaxed and bonding kitty. I do notice this seems to preclude nap time. Enjoy the compliment if your kitty is doing this-your kitty loves you!
I've only ever seen a cat do this when the cat is happy. Or, as in the case of them giving birth.
I agree my cats that knead seem to do it when they are happy and they purr as they do it. It's a wonderful feeling when a cat kneads and purrs with me. I love it! :)
I remember once reading that cats knead, because it has happy memories attached to it. They needed to knead to get out breast milk, and they remember that it used to have a reward attached to it. So it is a comfort to them. I hope I helped.
my Tweety does a bit of it, since she was sick she has sat with us more , before she was independent, more a loner .I think she must knead as you say out of their affection for you, they certainly have some cute and mysterious ways Lol
