Hi Mel,

Happy to see your baby doing well. Until you get him neutered maybe you can get him used to a harness.

You can  not use a regular dog leash on a cat, LOL! They will or you will strangle them. The harness distributes the restraint around the entire cat body, no just the neck.....and Yea, good luck with him liking it.
First just leave the lease where he can smell it and his scent will be on it.
Then put just the harness over hid head and try to fasten it very loose.
Keep it on him a few hours  day for maybe a week
Then tighten it more and see how he reacts. If he is ok then attach the leash to the harness, and WA LA!!
Oh if only it were that easy. You will have to let him get familiar with it for a while before he will be prancing around the neighborhood, showing off his handsome self....like "HELLO LADIES!"

Good luck,
CML

Our girls have always gone outside (those that showed an interest), but only with our supervision.  It's easier now that we have a well-fenced back yard.

Our first 2 kitties of our married life, who we adopted in February 1983, Queen Victoria and Calamity Jane, actually liked wearing a harness and going for walks on leash.

So glad to read that your fur baby is getting better. As he is not fixed, I think
it's really important not to let him outside. Cats are a lot safer inside.
For one thing, they can't get into cat fights. Our male ginger cat , Sammy,
isn't allowed to go outside.  We adopted our Sammy from a cat rescue
organization. I had to sign a contract and one of the things in the contract
was the understanding that under no circumstances was Sammy allowed
to go outside. I'm very glad your kitty is getting better.  Eve ( mother
of Sammy the cat )

Honey, call your local Humane association and see about getting free neutering for your boy.  They might do it or know who does, there are a lot of feral-cat associations out there who do a lot of neutering.  Not only will your boy keep fighting a lot if he is entire, the smell of his urine and his spray will knock you out after a while.  If you are renting, the landlord will totally disapprove of having an entire male around.  Please call and see what you can find.  If there is no humane association that you know of, call a vet and ask if there are any free spay/neuter clinics held in your area.  It's important.

It sounds like your cat was definitely in a cat fight and got an abscess from it.  I don't know if you've seen cats fight before, but they roll around and fight on their backs.  If your cat was running away he would've had wounds on his back.  So, apparently your cat was fighting and got clawed or bitten in the belly.

I hope that your cat is fixed, because if he's not, he will get into a whole lot more fights.  "Whole" males are much more territorial and will fight more than a fixed male.  So, if he's not fixed please get him fixed.

My wife rescued barely weaned kitten from a parking lot when we were at Eglin AFB back in the early 80's.  April Dancer was our little house gremlin, so I well understand your feelings for your lil guy.

He is a very lucky kitty to have found someone like you to love and care for him. You saved his life Mel, how good is that?
