Azodyl to large for my cat

They are putting my cat on azodyl. She is very small, under 5 lbs, and 12 years old. These are large pills. I'm very scared to give them to her. Wouldn't it be better to get any of the azodyl into her any way I can than not to give it at all?

Hi, I have another idea.  Why don't you call a compounding pharmacy and explain the situation about the capsule being too large.  They may be able to transfer the powder in the original large capsules into smaller capsules that will be easier for your little five pounder to handle.

Best wishes to you and your little girl.

I got the pills. I went in to the doc and had them show me how to give them. (Although it goes nothing for me like it did for them!) It appears they are a size small capsule according to the bottle. I have a pill gun that came yesterday but I haven't tried it yet. At this point I'm just trying to learn how to do this as fast and calm as I can make it. My biggest problem is getting her to open her mouth. I've watched a lot of videos too, but pressing on the hinges doesn't seem to work. Pj doesn't eat canned food or treats so I'm going to keep trying for a while before I search for another formula. It would really help if the azodyl capsule had the pepcid quarter inside of it.

So how is baby Jenesis? Have you found a way to treat without those Big Pills??

let us know if you would, K?

Luckily, when our Calamity Jane Grey was having a bit of kidney trouble, supplemental subq fluids (Ringer's Lactate) a couple times a week did the trick for her last 2 years.  What finally got her at 21 years 4 months was a pair of strokes.

Hopefully you can buy some more quality time for your tiny treasure.

Thanks for the replies everyone. We go into the vet this afternoon for her to show me how to give the pills. We had a phone consult yesterday evening with the lab results. The Dr expressed on the phone that she thought these may be too big for my girl. She explained that they needed to be refrigerated, and kept whole.....then also told me numerous other ways people have of giving them from hiding in treats to grinding and mixing with broth etc....I got the feeling that officially she was telling me going "by the book" meant give exactly as written, but un officially give them any way we could. We will see what she says later today.

And yes, these are for renal failure. She is not in final stage yet.  The damage has already been done though. These and prescription food are to manage daily, help the kidneys not work so hard so she can try for extra time before going too far down hill. Others have maintained with many more happy years so I figured why not us too?! : )

hi, I thought I remembered an OLD post by our one time medhelp holistic Vet dr. Cheng...I did some searching and found it....click on this link for her info. apparently you can open the capsule and mix with food, but if opened you will have too give 2x's the dosage, the capsules are coated so they do not disolve until they reach the intestines, thats why liquids or plain pills do not work...best to spread out and not give all at once, heres the link

Well you got me. Maybe someone else here has a way to administer the Azodyl.

This drug is used to help the Kidneys and prevent further deterioration?

Anything I have read on it says the capsule SHOULD NOT be broken up, only taken whole Sounds like this pill could be bigger than your little 5 pounder  Obviously the vet feels she needs this so try getting those Greenies Pill Pockets and sticking it in one of them.

Last resort-have your vet formulate it in smaller capsules and have her take it Twice a day? Maybe?? She needs to get the full dose each day not part of it.

Let us know what the outcome is?

Ask your vet if there is a liquid suspension, which might be easier to administer to such a delicate little friend.

You might also try cutting the pill and administering it as 2 doses over the course of the day.
