Hi, I have a kitty that has some intestinal problems for a while now, and no treatment seems to work for him. This is getting really frustrating, and I an just looking for more insight on the matter, along with any advice about what can be done to help him recover from this.
It all began two months ago, when he started having diarrhea or something close to diarrhea, with blood in it. First I ran a test for parasites in his stool, and they didn't find anything, and then I did one for bacteria, and two of them were found: "Escherichia coli β", and "Pseudomonas aeruginosa". for which the vet prescribed the antibiotic "Fortum" (here's some information about it at this page: http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Fortum+(antibiotic) ), 2 mg each 12 hours, for a week, intravenous. It was impossible to go this way, because it would have meant for my cay to have a catheter for a whole week, and knowing him he would have just ended up breaking his vein while trying to get rid of it, so instead of this he got the shots subcutaneous.
A few days after the treatment was over, he started having normal stool again, with no blood. I'll have to mention that while he was under the treatment with antibiotics the vet had also prescribed for him the medicine called "Enteroguard", which he was given for all those seven days in which, even if he didn't bleed anymore, he still had diarrhea. While he was under the treatment, we also only fed him with dried food from Hill's - intestinal disease, or from royal canine, the same intestinal diet. After the treatment was over, I started feeding him again wet food, as well as dried food from Hill's, only that it wasn't for intestinal disease anymore, since he didn't like it so much. The reason why I started feeding him regular wet food again was because, from what I've read on the subject, it isn't quite healthy for cats to eat only dry food all the time, and that it is advisable to alternate.
Anyways, after a few days of normal stool, the problem came back and I started giving him enteroguard again, because it was the only thing that actually stopped the bleeding.
I talked to another vet, that told me the reason why he is bleeding is because he might indeed have some parasites, even though the test didn't find any, and that those parasites, located in the small intestine, are somehow responsible for the bleeding and for the existence of those two bacteria. He then gave me the external spot-on anti-parasite called "advocate" ( http://www.advocate-spot-on.com/fileadmin/presslounge/att/2005-09-540-E.pdf ) telling me that it should fix the problem.
After administering the solution I still gave him enteroguard for like a week, just to make sure that he doesn't bleed until the parasites would be killed. A few days after I stopped giving him enteroguard he seemed to be fine, until this evening when he made diarrhea with blood again.
I really don't know what to do anymore, and I don't think the solution is to keep giving him enteroguard, because it doesn't actually heal anything and I don't know how healthy it is for any living thing to keep taking pills daily.
Just as a side note, my kitty seems to be in perfect shape, happy, and joyous. He is a year and half, and he is like my kid, which is why it feels so bad going through all this hassle. I'd appreciate any help and advice.
