Cat Scratch

Good morning,

I was playing with a cat and it accidentally scratched me.  It seemed friendly but I was told by a friend that since I did not know the cat or its owner that it might have rabies and that this scratch could have infected me.  It used its back leg to scratch me.  Should I be going to a doctor just in case? How often is rabies transmitted through cat scratches?

you can't contact rabies through a scratch...only from a bite.

however if the scratch is deep you can get a serious infection. did you wash it well afterwards with soap and hot water and maybe applied some peroxide

I wouldn't rush out and see a doctor unless after 24hrs (or so) its becoming very red and inflamed and particularly if this reddness is spreading far beyond the initial scratch area itself..if not, just keep it clean and use peroxide IMO.
