Chronic Bleeding.

Friends,

I have posted about my cat's digestive issues before. Let me tell the story and I'll make it short and to the point. My male, neutered 1 y.o cat has ALWAYS have problems when he evacuates. He doesn’t have problems evacuating but he does right after. He bleeds a lot, leaving traces of blood on the floor and wherever he goes. When I say he bleeds, I'm talking about bleeding as in IT’S REALLY CONCERNING. He never seemed to be in pain but cats are so good at hiding the pain sometimes. I have tried different brands thinking he had a sensitive stomach, and lastly I decided to switch him to better nutrition: cooked meat, chicken, fish, eggs, little to no carbs, fiber, vitamins and minerals added by me and, occasionally, raw meat. Well I was never able to accomplish this so I decided it was time for another trip to the vet.

The day I made an appointment I had an accident with him inside. A lady hit the back of my car. We are both fine but I had to cancel that appt and make a new one for next day. The next day my mom took us to the vet as I was in no condition to drive. I explained everything to the vet, to which he replied he needed to sedate Abby to take a look inside to see what's going on. I left him at the vet. An hour later I got a call from him, saying my cat had chronic colon issues. The mucosa is pure blood; it doesn't even look like normal mucus. The colon is so bad and there's so much blood that when my cat evacuates, all this blood comes out because of the pushing. Feces were checked and it's all fine. Blood in the bladder wasn't found. Only blood inside the colon. Vet said we had three options: Chronic digestive disorders - he also mentioned Chron's Disease- Parasites - highly unlikely he said- and Cancer. He did a biopsy, took cell samples and sent it out to the lab. I have not received the results yet. In the meantime, my cat is on Antibiotics - Flagyl- prednisone and prescription food -Hill's Z/D-

Since the cat came back from the vet 6 days ago he doesn't look too good. He has lost weight, is depressed, has had diarrhea, and doesn’t play. Mind you, my cat used to play all the time. He hates the new food so I've been mixing it up with the one he likes. I have called the vet twice about his diarrhea, to which he replied that the prescribed food was precisely to avoid diarrhea and that he didn't think the meds were causing it. He found this very odd. Now, yesterday he did not evacuate AT ALL.  For a cat that hasn't been eating I understand. He has been pooing a lot and not eating, so there is that one day he hast to just stop evacuating since he isn't eating.  But it is still concerning. The vet wants me to keep him informed until the lab results are in.

Has any of you been in this situation before? What would happen if he had cancer in the colon? Would I have to put him to sleep? What can I do to make him like the food? He is drinking plenty of water; but my poor fella just isn't himself. I'm reaching the point of frustration already.

therese, I'm glad you posted. Thank you! He has always have these issues. Just now I came to realize it was about time to find out why he is bleeding. Like vets say, a cat bleeding through the rectum isn't good. I will finish the antibiotics. Rest assure I will. As for prednisone, I just finished the first cycle: 2 tablets a day for 5 days. Today I started the second phase: 1 tablet a day for 5 days. The third phase is 1 tablet every 5 days. Antibiotics must be given 2ice a day.

cmulligan, a million thanks for your kind comments. He is a young kitty like you said. I have faith and hope he'll bounce back. So you say antibiotics can give diarreah? That's something that's been in my head. He got diarrhea as soon as he started taking his meds and eating his prescription food.  I asked the vet and he said the food can't be causing it and to think that prednisone is the cause is a no no. He didn't say anything about the antibiotics, so maybe the Flagyl is making his stool very loose. I appreciate your response. This cat means a lot to me.

I will keep you guys informed as soon as I get the lab results.

Hugs!

When did it start?  Was he like this from birth?

Make sure you finish the antibiotics because if there is bleeding the barrier is broken and bacteria can get into the body.

The prednisone will help a lot with healing and could help to turn him around.  Be careful giving it up as you have to taper this one and the vet will tell you how.  It helped my dog loads, curred his chronic Inflamatory Bowel, which was due to ecoli bacteria.  He was on it 2 months.

We will keep watching + waiting for the result.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. I just went through this my boy who had some similar symptoms and similar vet exchanges. The biopsy should give you a good idea of what you are looking at. Just to give you some insight as to what we learned form our experience is that antibiotics did give our boy diarhea. Antibiotics would kill off all the bacteria including the good bacteria and cause this condition. Other diet and drugs given to help the loose stool did not help. Since we were also dealing with blood loss we had his blood work done and did have to deal with some anemia. This may cause some of the symptoms you described.

You have a young boy and he should be very strong. I hope the doctor gets your biopsy results back soon as this should be your best indication for a course of treatment. I'm sure your vet has done blood work but if you don't here back soon you may want to consider having this done again to check for anemia which can be treated until the underlying cause of the problem is determined.

I hope he starts to feel better soon.
