Claws getting caught on carpet

My cat (a feral) who is indoors from a kitten (5 years old now) is getting caught on carpet.  I have never been able to catch she is still very feral. It s so frustrating cause there is nothing I can do. I have the sandpaper scratcher but she just uses one spot and it is worn now.   I did post this once before but now it is happening again and I am trying to see if anyone has some new ideas,  This is so stressful for me, and probably to her also.

Hi all, The log is still working and still rough, amazing,  They have two more waiting for me at work.  Had no idea it would last this long.

Probably that’s her favorite stop, try to cover it with something she can’t scratch it or put a cat scratching post on that exact spot.

I trim MB's claws. Then she resharpens them. She loves to climb trees. She catches birds sometimes too.

That is interesting.  I was going to suggest you get her a piece of firewood with bark on it.  That's what kitties use in the wild, and as long as the log does not shed a lot of pitch onto your floor, in other words, I hope it's oak or hickory and not pine or fir, you should be in good shape.  Around here, we sit on them outside -- people cutting down trees will give you a chunk that is cut straight across and is about two feet high.  It makes an interesting side table!  lol

Well if anyone wondered what ever happened to Mollie and her carpet night mare read on,

I finally found something to help Mollie stop getting stuck on carpet.  Found an untreated log and had it cut so there was a flat side.  I set the log flat side down on a stepping stone so it would not lay on carpet.  She was very curious at first.  I found her laying next to it, guess she felt she was outdoors, lol.

It took her about two weeks to start using it but she goes to town on it now.  It totally wore down her nails and she is not getting stuck any longer.

I hope this can help someone else having this issue.  IT WORKS!

Hi Marilee,

IF you know how to clip the claws on a cat so as to not cut to the pink part, then I would suggest  you drug your feral and Not yourself! LOL!

Ask the vet to give you a safe antihistamine you can buy over the counter, like Claritin or Zyrtec . The dosage will be to much for one capsule since it is made for humans. He will tell you to probably give her 1/4 of the tab. This should make her drowsy enough to control her. This can be put in a Greenies Pill Pocket and she will never know.

Now if you have never cut a cats claws , then I would suggest you take her to a vet periodically and they will do the clipping---if you can catch her--there again those antihistamines work wonders at making our ferals very pliable.

Either way you do not want them to be pulled completely out or grow into the actual paw pad--that would really be bad, so ASAP talk to your vet or A vet.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

Thank you for your replies, she is using the emery board scratch post but it is not wearing down that one claw.  I am very stressed, I just know I am going to have to try and catch her, I think I need to take some medication to relax me first.  Say a prayer please that it comes off before this happens:)

One more thing I just wanted to mention.  If you decide to buy a scratching post, most of them have a fairly wide base. It is important to anchor the scratching post under something so the scratching post won't accidentally fall on the cat and spook her.  Where is the carpet that your cat is catching her claws on ?  I wouldn't put the scratching post in that room where she might have to cross the carpet in order to get to the scratching post.
I have had the pleasure of adopting a number of cats over the years.
I have always used a scratching post with good results and all my cats have loved cat nip. I buy cosmic cat nip. Anyway, I wish you and your kitty all the best.   Eve

Hello there,

First of all, I think it is wonderful that you have saved your feral kitten
and brought her inside where she is safe. As far as the kitty's claws being
caught in your carpet. Perhaps you could buy a cat scratching post.
That is what we have for our cat  I haven't tried this myself, but I have heard this can be effective. You could buy some catnip from a pet store and
sprinkle some cat nip on the cat scratching post. Our cat scratching post has a pom pom on the top of it. Our cat plays with the pom pom sometimes. He loves to bat it around.  You say it is probably stressful when your kitty catches her claws on the carpet . Well, let's just say it would not be pleasant.  I hope my suggestion is helpful to you.  Eve ( one of Sammy the Cat's caretakers and his mom )
