Clay litter

Back again as I am highly concerned about my Paradise now. She is only kitty I got left and I love her dearly like I did Hissie. I just now been reading about clay litter and God forbide the litter I use is made from clay. I read where clay litter causes health problems in cats. I used the same litter with Hissie. And some of the health issues, were what Hissie had. Did I kill Hiss with this litter? She went from healthy to in pitiful condition. I know I freak out over my girls....Hissie even though she is now gone and Paradise. I tried so hard to be very good to them. I have read to use plant type litter. I do know I am headed to the pet store today and this clay litter is gone for good. Any suggestions to my 2 posts, I am definitely willing to listen. God bless

thx for the links.....must not be the same as one I tried ZQ, I'm pretty sure it was in a box vs a bag...?
and I've not seen the Swheat either. I live in a small city under 30,000. most specialty items even IF avail in Canada have to be shipped in and thus the costs really add up....will keep my eyes open. tho.

Did you check out both links?  I'm curious if you can get Swheat Scoop in Canada!  That might be some good stuff, too.

I'd like to hear from someone that's used this litter.

BTW, I'm not at work yet.  I work tonight....late holiday hours.

Hugs
ZQ

PS-Have fun shopping!!!

well must not be the same one were comparing. this one wasn't that expensive....and strong smelling....shoot the memory is bad, I wish I had kept the bag to see for sure.

I wouln't be able to afford Worlds Best either, if the price was really high. but yes it would be much better for my lungs(copd). the one I'm adding to the clay right now 50/50 is made by presidents choice and wasn't costly....it too is made of corn.

are you at work already ZQ?....have yourself a great day. I'm off soon to finish my *#* shopping.....oh ya also♥

Opus, NOOOOOOO World's Best Cat Litter is 100% corn based.  It smells like corn.  It is by far my favorite, but it's too expensive for me to use. It REALLY is the best litter out there, and has no chemical smell at all and my cats did take a few licks of it.  On the package it tells you that it's safe for kitties to eat.

So, if you can afford this one, honey try it again.  It really is wonderful, wonderful stuff.  It would be great for your breathing.

Try it again!!!

hi ZQ, thats the name of the one I tried World's Best Cat Litter, this is the one that is soooo strong in pine (chemical) smells it was awful, even my boys wouldn't use it.....have you tried the wheat? has anyone out there? I've never seen it for sale here(oddly enough I live in farm country)...I would really like to try this one.
But a word of caution, even wheat is TREATED ....our pooor kitty's, get blasted with chemicals/preservatives etc in everything from the food to the litter....one end to the other!!

I've also heard/read that clay litter is bad for people and cats.  The clay litter is very dusty and can get into our lungs, as well as a cat's lungs.  It can cause some pretty bad breathing problems.  Think of it like this.......the lungs produce natural moisture(mucus) and you're breathing in this dust.  My thinking is that the dust can cling to the inside of our airways, possibly doing some damage.  God knows it affected my asthma.  I was using my inhalers left and right, many times a day when I used the clay clumping crap.

Now, I use a corn based clumping litter by Arm and Hammer, and my breathing is much much better now.  So, those of you w/ breathing problems, I would most definitely switch up your litter to the natural litters.  There are litters out there made of newspaper(Yesterday's News), wheat, corn(Arm And Hammer and World's Best Cat Litter), and there's even one made of pine(can't think of the name of this one).

If you've got breathing problems, then it'll help so much to switch up the brands to see the difference for yourselves.

Ps. I also heard something about laking of iron causing that behaviour - in humanes.
They say its commom in kids in very, very poor places. They start eating soil or bricks
And the anemy in those can be caused by bad nutrition and/or worms.

Not sure if clay litters here in my country are equal the ones you have.I have to search better.
The one I use has no scent asnd I always believed was made only of clay.

lynn.....its hard to do everything right/health wise, there are so many additives to ALL the products used for pets. even the litters marked 'natural' are full of additives. I've tried the natural corn litter and it too has chemicals, and my cats refused to use it...so any change has to be slow.....
recently I've read about PRESIDENTS CHOICE......GREEN LITTER (not the color)...it too is made of corn, I bought a bag last week and its not strong smelling lke the rest. so I'm adding it 50/50 to the clay.

Its the dust that comes off the clay litter than gets into their lungs as well as ours and it can cause health problems......
for anyone (me included) still using the clay litters....just be sure to get a type with as few additives as possible, particularly NO scent.
and be very careful when dumping or sifting thru a bag, so the dust fumes don't spray all over or anyone 'breaths' in....

I'll post more info as I find it, but so far there really aren't any good litters out there that don't present some problems.
you can try the paper plugs like rabbits use. or shavings but remember these won't clump up and you will go through lots of product.

anyone else with suggestions?

Hi hon.  First of all, please get the thoughts of making Hissie worse with the litter right out of your head. Don't even go there. Hissie came to you with problems which you cared for.  Even if litter DID cause a problem on top of the primary one, which I doubt, all we can do is learn from our mistakes and care for future pets differently.  We do the best we can with the information we know.

Now Paradise eating it is very bad.  Can end up like cement and cause a blockage.  I just googled this problem and first thing you want to do is what you are going to do which is replace the clay litter with something else.  That clay litter and the dust, not even good for YOU with COPD.  Iron deficiency was mentioned, but of course, need bloodwork for that and since that's impossible for the moment, let's start with the litter.

You had mentioned the potting soil - iron in there too if I'm not mistaken, but could also be PICA - cat/people are compelled to eat strange things.

Apple...man, I hate to say this to you and make you worry more, but the clay litter may cause problems "later."  All the dust isn't good, for one thing.  If that's all that's available to you or all you can afford, I understand completely and know you do/want the very best for your girls as we all do.  I am not an expert on litter by far.  Only thing we've ever used was Fresh Step long time ago.

My 3 cats uses clay litter - that never caused them any problem!
Take care with all the info you got - some are trash and just want us to buy special (expensive) products
Dont blame yourself for Hissie's death,I dont remember the reason she died( if you wrote about) but I doubt litter was a role on that.
