Does my cat have mange?

Hi, my cat started to loose weight and go bald and scabby on his ears a couple of weeks ago, he's been to the vets who gave him intibiotics which have done nothing. The baldness is now spreading across his head and down his neck and he seems to have a really hot head/ be burning up in the evenings.
I've read about mange on several websites and they all seem to say that it is incredibly itchy but he hasn't once scratched at it. he's due back at the vets tomorrow but I jut wondered if anyone else has encountered anything like this before.
He's 10 years old and mostly fit and active and this doesn't seem to have affected his daily routine/happiness/physical ability at all, he's still eating and drinking and passing solids/urine absolutely fine.
would appreciate some feed back with this one guys :)

OHHHH, I forgot to add something to my post!  If you think that diet is an issue, it wouldn't hurt to ask the vet for a special blood test to see where your cat's vitamin/mineral levels are!  When in doubt, this is the test to get.

Another possibility to think about-has there been a diet change?  Many times, vitamin/mineral and protein deficiencies will cause hair loss too.  Just something else to consider!!!

Hi veed,

I'm sorry about your pet. Mange can be so difficult to treat!! I have my cat with ringworm, which also causes hair loss and it is also spreading. My cat doesn't seem to be itchy around the ears. So, would you describe for us how the skin looks? Is it dry, flaky, scaly, do you see scabs? Sometimes, the only symptoms for ringworm is hair loss in irregular patterns. Doesn't have to be circular spots. So, I'd pay attention to that.

Another thing which could be happening to your cat is allergies. It could be food allergies or that he is allergic to a cleaning product or deodorizer you may be using in the house. Got any plants? Kitties can also be allergic to certain plants. Would you post a picture of the cat on your profile page so I could see him?

Is he indoors only? Do you keep him inside at all times? What food are you giving him? A lack of certain nutrients can cause air loss. But maybe this is just a bad case of skin disease. You posting pictures of him would be helpful, and also describe, if you can, what the skin condition is.

Hope to hear from you soon. I am now taking my older cat to the vet for his ringworm. *sigh* never ends....
