Expressed Anal Sac (and smell) question

Hello,
I just found this forum and am hoping someone can help.  My cat just recently got in a fight and injured his eye.  We had to take him to the vet, he got put on meds, and was told he has to stay in at least until the injury heals up.  Problem is, he's very much an outside cat... so he's pretty angry about being stuck indoors.  Yesterday he started letting off a horrible, sharp smell, which I figured out was him expressing his anal sacs.  He's left fluid behind pretty much anywhere he sits.  The apartment now reeks as well as him.  Does anyone have any sure shot solutions to killing the odor?  I know it'll be pretty hard to get it out of him (dry bath maybe?) but at least the rugs, sheets, etc? I tried the baking soda on the carpet to no avail...I used the arm and hammer carpet deodorizer, which may or may not have worked...I can't tell if I've just gotten used to the smell. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated as I have people coming over tonight, and this is the last thing I want them to smell!

I use a solution of vinegar and water (3:1 water heavy) which kills the smell even to them
I use this over a pet enzyme treatment that keeps it from staining

granted you have to deal with the vinegar smell for a few hours, but it clears up pretty fast

we've been using this while house-training the dog, as he was using his indoor kennel as a bathroom, and so far it seems to be working

unlike bleach it shouldn't ruin your rugs, no matter how much you spray on.

hope you get it cleared up before they get there, but if not, most people understand a sick animal :)
