FIP

by crabby70, Oct 28, 2009 08:18PM
It all started last week ...When my 6 month old persian went to the bathroom in front of me....He did it the following morning to..So I called the vet for a check up...He had a high fever...He did a culture on his urine and put him on amoxicillian...This week he went in for a follow up....His fever was even higher...He took blood and is thinking its FIP...He switched the antibotics... I will know the results tomorrow... Has anyone had a cat with same symptoms..Could this the beginning of FIP and the end of my sweet little one...

oh poor baby..I'm sorry I don't know what could be wrong other than a UTI and the antib's would work for that, good that a culture was taken anyway.
I sure hope its not FIP....please let us know.
my prayers

I am very sorry to hear about your Persian...I used to breed Silver Shaded Persians and I know what dolls this breed can be!

Is this the first time your kitty has had medical issues?  The reason that I ask is that in general, cats with FIP are poor doers and never really thrive.   It certainly is a possibility since FIP is more common in cats and kittens from a cattery type situation (larger breeders), but there are other possibilities as well.   The bloodwork can be extremely helpful in determining what the cause might be.

Please keep us posted as to the kitty's progress...

I just took my older cat to the vet and he thinks she has FIP!  I have 5 cats - all inside cats.  This cat is 16 years old, started losing weight.  Took her to the Vet, 1st time, did blood work, she was a little anemic, possible parisite.  Put her on anitibiotics, then vitimins.  Now her stomach is huge!  He did a blood test for FIP because she has the symptoms but he said it's not common.  She is my husband's cat, he is just sick over it.

Waiting for results.

I forgot to mention, the odd thing is she eats a lot.  Is your persian eating and drinking?  Is his stomach enlarged?

I hate the waiting :(

Did the bloodwork on your cat test for thyroid levels?  I would be more concerned about hyperthyroidism than FIP in a 16 yr old cat.

I'm not sure what tests he took.  I'm going to call tomorrow and I will find out.  Thanks so much for responding!

The blood work came back...His white cell count was good.. Its on the very low side but he was exposed to Coronavirus...So we are watching his belly....He is still taking his antibiotics..I am away for a couple of days...My mom is watching him...I am praying its something else and curable...The vet doesnt like that his fever did not respond to the meds the first time around...

Yuk..hope your cat is well..

Unfortunately, the test showing he was exposed to a coronavirus is not very helpful as most cats are exposed to a variety of coronaviruses in their lives.  This is a quote from one of our DVMs over in the Ask A Vet Expert Forums:

"FIP is difficult to diagnose without doing a biopsy of affected tissue. FIP is caused by a corona virus which is spread in the fecal material. There is a corona titer test but that will just test for exposure to corona virus not tell you if the cat has FIP. Corona virus is not uncommon in cats and is seen more in multi-cat households such as a cattery. The virus mutates within the individual cat to cause FIP. There may be some genetic predisposition to a cat developing FIP. But FIP as a disease is not spread between cats. I hope that makes sense. "

Keep us posted here as to his progress and if he is responding to the antibiotics.  If the fever persists, you might post his symptoms and treatment so far on the Ask A Vet forum side to get some more opinions.

You have my sympathies...it is indeed tough to lose such a precious pet at such a young age.  My thoughts and prayers are with you as you share this news with your son.

I'm so sorry for you and for your son...the death of a pet is a big loss and a sudden unexpected death even harder to come to terms with...I wish you both all the best, you did all you could for this poor baby.

Oh a little ragdoll baby...they are so darling, my grandaughter got one as a kitten when she was 4...and they were such a team!
than my grandaughter developed allergies to cats so the ragdoll(TIA) came to live with me at 3 yrs old....
she was the most playfull cat I've ever had...even up to her passing at age 8 she was still a kitten at heart!
Enjoy!

My heart goes out to you.  I know very well what is to lose such a beloved part of the family.  I would like to say that time heals, and for some it does.

I still think about my Droopy and Sophie everyday.  Droopy passed away in 2003 and Sophie in 2005.

It is difficult.

Your son is learning the mortality of life...I know it ***** for them to learn when they are young.

You are in my thoughts and heart.

I understand what you are going thru as many others do in this forum, we are all pet lovers.
I too was especially attached to my Opus and needing to put him down 4 years ago is still the saddest day in my life, he was my darling.....I too have his ashes with instructions to be buried with mine!
we grieve and it takes along long time to ease the pain, your poor baby will always be with you, in your heart.
bless you
