Gray patch of hair

Gray patch of hair

My jet black 3 year old cat had a gray spot on her back - just above the joint where her tail meets her back back in December.  The patch is short wirey hair.  The patch may be a little larger - not real sure.  We thought that maybe she had been in a fight since she goes outside.  The patch is still here.  She doesn't seem to itch.  She doesn't even seem to notice it at all.  Does anyone have any ideas what this may be?  Really odd since it has a different texture and color from all her other hair.  She is a short hair.

I've never heard of anything like that before, I do have a black dog that has a few grey hairs but that might be accompanied by aging, although you said your cat is only 3 years. Have you taken her to a vet about this? Is there a lot of visible skin? It might be some form of infection or irritation.

Yes, there's a not uncommon genetic disorder which I'm sorry to say i can't remember the name of at the moment. One of the symptoms is this patch at the back area. The fur tends to be coarse, short,  and brittle or "discolored". There are a few other things that can cause this, but the area is fairly specific to this. I would say if your cat isn't showing any other health issues, not to worry. However, if she does, you should get a comprehensive work up done to be sure it isn't a serious problem. Disorder isn't the best choice of word...perhaps "syndrome" would be better.

Thank you both so much.  She isn't due to see the vet again until late March.  Since she doesn't have any other health issues, I will wait to see the vet.  The area in question doesn't show any skin at all - just shorter, coarser gray hair.  All her other fur is still very shiney and soft.  Her eyes are bright, her appetite the same.  She is just a beautiful, loving cat with a very weird patch of fur - lol.  If its still there in March when I see the vet - I will let everyone know what the vet has said.  Thank you both again!
