Grinding teeth and grabbing at mouth while eating wet food

my 14 year old cat is grinding his teeth and grabbing his mouth while eating pate wet can food. my vet cleaned teeth to make sure there were no underlying root issues and did xrays on his mouth/jaw. they found nothing. final diagnosis was that it's neurological. My doubt is why is he only doing it while eating? I'm getting a second opinion with a specialty vet department. should it be with a neurologist or general m.d.v.  it's $175.00 for office visit so I want to get it right. vet said general yet specialty vet office says neurologist because that was their diagnosis. I'm not sure I can trust my vet as I feel they are diagnosing neurological by only by default. Any thoughts??

I am in full agreement with Opus! Poor baby sounds like She needs to see a Dental Specialist.

Let us know how he does.

Definitely dental.  I don't think it's neurological at all.  I would take him to a veterinary dental specialist.  I know your vet missed something.

hi, I'm no Vet but can't really see this being neuro...grinding teeth and pawing at mouth are classic signs of a dental issue. Im glad xrays were done, I would seriously take these to an Oral Veterinary Dr. for them to have a look at. FORLs are what comes to mind, my one cat has them and they are only seen by xray....but by a trained eye they should be apparent. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2121&aid=380
