How do I get my kitten to stop biting

by miley36, Jun 23, 2008 05:05PM
I need help with getting my 6 month old female kitten to stop biting. My 6 year old daughter is afraid to walk in the house because the kitten attacks her feet and bites them. She is very affectionate and will be purring rubbing against you and just bite your arm. She does not leave a mark but it hurts my child. Tried spaying with water but she loves water. Tried rewarding all good behavior and ignoring the bad. Tried a loud no and moving her away. nothing is working and she was 6 weeks when we got her. I am desperate.help

Well the key point here is that she is still very much a KITTEN and that she is a CAT also. It is close to impossible to reprimand one of these guys after the fact as it is so much darn fun to them whilst they are doing it being preditors and all so about all I can sugest is discourgment. This entails you need to be aware when your daughter may be coming in the house and through the door and removing the kitten, placing her in a different room where she cannot pounce on your daughter. After a while she should grow out of this behavior but only if you break the habbit, uhnm fun, for quite some time. Diligence is the key factor here so you do have to be aware when your daughter will be coming home and remove the cat until you break her of the habit. If you keep forgetting, well, it just becomes even more of a game for the cat.

I have had many cats over the years ant this is one of the behaivors that does require intervention. Let me know how it goes.

The only thing I'll add is one a kitten misbehaves, you scruff it and push gently down saying "no!" holding it for a few seconds.  It's what a mother cat does and if done correctly is acceptable scolding.

Hey, when it cat bites me to hard, I make a yowling noise and do the above, possibly biting back (on the ear or foot, gently mind you). It seems to gets the point across, and it's VERY satisfying...although you do get a mouth full of fur. :)

New Leaf is right, They do usually grow out because they learn you don't like it. Some do need a little help getting a clue though.
