How young of kitty can u give Clinamycin?

by clight, Sep 27, 2009 04:37PM
Last week I wrote in wondering about one of my three week old kittens possibly having an umbilical hernia that developed quite quickly. I did consult with several vets via phone who all told me not to worry and to have it repaired at the same time I have the kitty spayed//neutered.
Well, it just bugged me to no end of how quickly this supposed hernia developed and how large it became, so a couple of nights ago I looked very close at it and as I was doing so, one side of it ruptured and was full of pus. My gut feelings of it being an abscess rather than a hernia were confirmed. The other side of it did not rupture, but was just so large and the skin so thin, I pricked it with a needle and it too was full of pus. I cleaned it with peroxide, put some triple antibiotic ointment on and promptly started the kitten on Amoxicillin.
My question is, I also have on hand Clindamycin which is what we normally use to treat abscesses and such but am fearful to give to the kitten since it is only apx 3-31/2 weeks old. I was just wondering how old do kitties have to be to use Clindamycin.
TYVM for your help!

WOW, you've got to be very careful giving meds to kitties.  The vets go by weight to figure out the dosing.  I DO agree w/ ya....it does sound like an infection, but in my opinion, it is too risky to give the baby the clindamycin w/ out taking him/her to the vet.  Way too risky and clindamycin might not be the correct antibiotic for the kitten's problem.

Please come back w/ an update.  Wishing the best for the kitten.  =)

Just giving u update. I noticed that the Amoxi was working well right away so I did not even bother with the clindamycin, The knot on its umbilical area is almost completely gone:) And FYI since I deal with so many kittens and cats I already knew it was safe to give small amounts of amoxi to the babies:)
