I have one cool kitty!

I have a male cat who's a little over a year old who is healthy, extremely active and loves to eat! I recently discovered, by accident, that he loves frozen fruit bars on a stick. I was eating one while sitting on the couch and he wrested it away from me, then began licking it to beat the band! (I was licking one side, and he was licking the other.) He loved it so much, he licked the stick when it was all gone! My question is, is this okay for him to ingest. The bars are called Whole Fruit, have very little sugar and real fruit pieces. So far, mango is his favorite. Please advise.
I have another question. He has frequent sleet in his eyes. I clean this with cotton pads dampened with a little eyewash I got at the drugstore. Is this normal? Or could it be allergies, or something else? FYI: He is and all-black domestic short hair, so the sleet may be a little more obvious then with lighter cats.

hahahaha that is one cool cat! :)

Well, I'll tell you this from my point of view, and also because I saw this response on the expert forum. First, according to Dr. Aleda on the expert forum (Ask a Vet) cats do not need fruits. Even though the yogurt bars contain very little sugar, really, mango or other fruits are usually a no-no for kitties. My experience has told me that, because cats like sugar (carbs) so much, we tend to please them, right? (How can we say 'No' to that face?) So we keep giving them more treats with sugar, plus the commercial dry foods which also contain carbs. In a day, a little body has consumed more sugar than imagined, and then problems like diabetes, obesity etc emerge.

From experience, cats are better off on a cat diet only. Treats are not good. In fact, treats are never good. I do not believe in treats that clean their teeth or treats that help them lose or maintain weight. Cats are carnivores, obligate carnivores, meaning they function with fat and protein and get very, very little benefit from sugar. In other words, they just don't need sugar, especially a cat who is already kept on a dry food diet. What do you feed your little adventurer? I can tell you, and you may think it's gross or not appropriate, but my cats' treats consist of raw chicken heart, and they love it, and it's got taurine, which is always welcomed in their bodies. So, instead of giving your cat sugar, you could try little chicken pieces, or maybe even heart, which you can buy at any super market (Walmart, Publix, or whatever you have available) . They usually are hesitant about it for the first few days but then, instinctively, they just eat it, enjoy it, and even growl hahahahaha, a little carnivore in action!!

I'm not sure if your cat's allergies are due to the yogurt bars. Just in case, you want to stop that see if he improves. If he doesn't, try to think how often he experiences this and how long. If this is a constant problem which he has all the time, then it could be food allergies, or something in the environment. The hard part is trying to figure out WHAT. Keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like you do a great job cleaning that up. Try to go little by little with that and see if you can resolve the problem. First, I'd see if I'm spraying something in the house which is causing him to have this problem (Lysol or any scent can cause it depending on the cat) If this isn't the issue, see if the litter is to be blamed (yeah, sometimes our cats can be allergic to cat litter. But hey, most cats are allergic to CAT FODD, so I wouldn't be surprised if your cat was allergic to his litter) And, um, if that doesn't work either, I'd try a different diet.
Taking him to the vet if nothing seems to work would be a great idea.

Hope your kitty improves :)
