IBD and Budesonide

I am in need of some help in understanding IBD medication side effects.
Does anyone out there have experience with an IBD cat (lymphocytic enteritis) official diagnosis.
My Mia is taking a liquid formulation of this drug but seems to have VERY loose stools. Is that normal? She was fine before this med. Now they want to add Metrocondizole, which she foams at the moth when given. I am about to just stop everything and let her just live her life with her favorite foods, no meds, and hope for the best .

It is wearing us both out. All I want is her to be happy and not have to eat z/d and fight with her every day with meds. Am I a horrible mom?????

Really?

hey C....save the 3 month testing...of COURSE its a food allergy causing the itching...don't know why Vets can't understand this and always insist on a restrictive diet to 'see' heres one link (ya I'm good at those..lol) just overlook the 'diet trails' they show at the end

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/eosinophilic_granuloma.html

instead go with a diet that is a 'novel' protien, meaning a source of meat that Mia has never had before, MOST cat foods contain chicken or something with feathers...ie turkey/duck etc.
try and get her to eat something novel...ie venison, buffalo, lamb...beef, fish (only if you have too...cuz fish can lead to other issues, but would be okay for awhile)
just remember to switch over to a new food gradually or the diarrhea will get worse before it gets better.

a probiotic never hurts.

also a good idea to add Omega3 fatty acids...this is wonderful for the skin and coat.

good luck and NO you are never a bad mommy.....rant on!!!

Hey ZQ,
You are absolutely right about me being overwhelmed and frustrated!!!
This has been going on since the end of Jan. Mia NEVER had diarrhea.....so like you and O said it could actually be that expensive prescription mud they call food.

I think I will try a probiotic with this. I have to keep her on this for 2 more months to see if it was a food allergy causing her to itch and lick herself silly.

Thank you so much for listening to my rants--You know I must be desperate when I suggest just letting her live her life with no meds and hope for the best.

Hi Opus,
Thanks for the web site info. I will read them and see about her diet. She was put on this specifically because she was scratching and licking . They want her on this 3 months in order to tell if it is a food allergy causing the itching after her last bout of vomiting.

I feel like I am going in circles --now someone has suggested a probiotic called s bulicantii---Ugh!  Now reading about this. I will continue reading and trying to fiqure out if plain prendesone shots might be best. I wanted to avoid that at all costs....but I think your right with it being the food. It is like pudding, and she likes the dry better.

Thanks for getting back to me O--needed to vent

You are not a horrible mom at all!!!!  If only, more people cared as much about cats as you do, the world would be a better place.

I think you're just feeling very overwhelmed right now dealing with meds.  We've all been there.....Our kitties don't know what's best for them, WE do.  They hate meds and God forbid, something tastes awful(everything makes them foam at the mouth).  We've had cats that have foamed at the mouth from trying to eat a moth.  LOL

Anyway, Budesonide is a steroid.  I have that as an ingredient in one of my inhalers for asthma.  I don't think that's causing the diarrhea.  I think it's either the diet or that other med Metrocondizole.  What was the vet's reason for putting Mia on this?

Take some deep breaths, and try to narrow down what's causing this diarrhea.  One step at a time.

Hugs
ZQ

poor little Mia, she is sure having her troubles...lucky tho that she has such a good mommy and is helping her as best she can. Its always such a difficult dilemma to weight the pros and cons the quality of life vs quantity. First of all you need to decide if these medication are helping her or just adding to her troubles. Are you positive its the med that is causing the diarrhea? thats not one of the side effects listed, in fact constipation is. so perhaps the dosage isn't yet just right???
the other med you mentioned Metrocondizole a side effect of this one IS diarrhea...something seems not right if the Vet wants to add this one???
but I'm no expert on IBD or the meds.
I am not a fan of Hills precription diets....if you read the first 3 ingredients 'hydrolyzed chicken liver', water, corn starch...etc. NO actual protien, its all chemicals...yuck
perhaps its more the diet than the meds?.....I will also include a link to what Dr Pierson a Vet nutritionist has to say abt prescription diets. I would read this if I were you and explore the rest of her site too...she has so much valuable knowledge abt feline nutrition and diseases....I know MORE reading....but hopefully some answers?

I'm really not a good one to reply to this, I have no experience with these meds. I will send you a link to a good site tho and hopefully it can give you some answers.

hope this has helped some Cml....our prayers go out to you and Mia. ((♥))
