Kitten farts?

We just adopted a little sweet kitten from a shelter (she was in a foster home) and we've been feeding her science diet for kittens. She's about 3 months old. We notice that she farts now and again (it's quite stinky). She is up to date on all her shots and has been dewormed and has been checked out at a vet prior to our adoption. Is it due to the new food? Is Science Diet a bad choice? Will she just adjust to the new food over time? Does it require a vet visit?

Ok, thanks both of you :) I will try and eventually switch both of them over to Wellness adult for both of them. I already notice less stinky farts :) Hopefully it works out nicely for both cats...as they do eat each other's foods!!

Opus has said it best. Out in the wild there are no labels. They all eat the same things out there. So let them share. No problem. You don't have an issue........trust us! :-)

See, I have one healthy cat (Dillan) and one IBD cat who once suffered from fatty liver disease. Abby, my high maintenance cat needs to be on special diets. Dillan does not. However, I know I cannot buy two types of foods because they'll end up sharing and eating each other's foods and it will be a royal mess. So.....Dillan eats Abby's food. They are both healthy :-)

When I was feeding them raw foods they both ate the same things. Dillan was a kitten and Abby was an adult back then. Nothing ever happened. Trying to get them to eat raw again, but with so little time with a new baby in the house it's just better for me to buy a diet fit for a cat such as mine.............who suffers from chronic colitis (IBD) and who has a history of feline hepatic lipidosis.

hi, IMO and from articles I've read there really isn't any reason to put a kitty on 'kitten food'....think about it, out in the wild there are NO mice that are labeled for kittens only, they all eat the same diet!!! lol
the kitten food is higher in protein.....so would be a little high for the adult cat, but for short term I see NO problem with them sharing for a month or so than put them both on the adult formula...
good for you, I know you'll see an end to the farts....lol

Just switched to Wellenss for kitties. Hopefully that works! Doing half and half during the switch. Ok, the tricky thing now, though, is that our older cat was on an older cat diet, but if I put the kitten stuff out, he's eating it! So, I may have to just let that happen- because if I put the adult food out, the kitten eats that one! How do you all do it with two different aged cats in the house?

When my cat Abby was younger I fed him Science Diet. It did give him gas........a lot. I'm not sure what's in the food that makes them fart like that, or if it's something to do with the cat. I think not. I think the food makes them gassy. Please do switch to other brands. I love, love Wellness. My experience with the food has been the best. Make sure it says 'Grain-Free' or something along that line. It should not contain corn, potato, sweet potato, yucca, or rice. Try to buy something as close to what felines eat in nature as possible (protein, fat, fiber, water which canned foods have plenty of, vitamins, minerals)......and you'll see how the farting will go away immediately.

Occasional farting, especially in kittens, is completely normal.  Their insides are still growing and that can result in gas from time to time.  As long as she doesn't appear to be in distress or have diarrhea, I wouldn't be worried about it.

I was only able to find the Halo brand in fish...it looked like a very good food.  When I was changing Jade's diet, I bought a can of each - Wellness and Halo.  Try that and experiment.  Jade will not eat anything but Fancy Feast, but she Will eat the Halo on occasion.  Wet food is best in case that wasn't mentioned.  Please let us know how it goes and good luck!  You also might try the Wellness dry for kittens for snacking throughout the day.

Keep up updated and good luck!

I would suggest Wellness simply b/c it has a very 'good' reputation and I haven't heard of Halo before....be sure to ask for the grain free cans, as some may have grains and these are common for allergy or digestive reactions, let us know how that works. remember change slowly...♥

no hon it shouldn't require a vet visit, its possibly just something with the diet or the fast switch over thats not agreeing with her...there are alot of grains in science diet and she is finding this hard to digest most likely.
for a good grain free diet you can read www.catinfo.org the Vet there lists all the best brands at the end of her article.
two that I am familiar with is EVO and WELLNESS but there are a few others. Oh Natural Balance is another I believe.
good luck, just takes some experimenting, don't change any diet quickly or she may well get diarrhea, just 50/50 to start with...post anytime if we can help.♥
