Kitten nails

My 6 month old Himalayan kitten has brittle nails that sometimes are splitting too.
She has been on dry Iams kitten food since before I bought her.
Should I change food?   I am so afraid of bad pet food-
Groomer has trouble cutting also.
The vet thinks all cats should be on can food- but she refuses to eat anything other than dry.
I thiught Iams was a real good food-

is there a vitiman I should be giving her .
Is this normal?

About a month ago she had diarrhea with some blood in it.
Vet gave her FortiFlora- it basicly has cleared up.

She is a beautiful girl - looks like royalty! :)

Firstly, are you sure this isn't the normal claw shedding that all cats get from time to time?  That can look like the nail is splitting, but it's just shedding the outside layer, which it should do from time to time.

If it's not that, then there is a small chance that it could be something called Onychoschisis which essentially mean brittle nails.  If the condition persists, you can take her to a vet for tests, but this would probably be a last resort, as skin biopsys and other yucky diagnostic tests are involved.

First, I'd try treating it dietarily.  Check with a vet or just try giving her a dietary supplement and be sure you are feeding her a good quality pet food, a canned and dry combination is always best and be sure she is getting enough water.

But really, chances are it's just normal spitting and shedding.  Try getting her a good scratching post so she can slough that stuff off and keep her nails in good condition.
