Litter Training.... >:(

My cat will continue to poop in one spot even with me putting him around it and spanking him. After I put the litter box in that spot he picks a new spot! How do I get him to stop doing this?!

Yep!! I agree Tamera. Just having insurance for you pets tells me that.
Please feel free to ask other questions if you run into a problem. Spanking is your thing, it seems to work for you. It does not make you love your cats, baby, or dog any less.

So Please come here for answers , we really are good at helping out with the learning process. We can suggest things. The fact that you cared enough to ask for help is what is important.

Keep us posted and please let me help if you need it, K?

Sincerely,
CML

I just want everyone to know that I have tried those alternatives. Yes, I spank my cat. I sure do! I grew up as if someone did something to misbehave or do something bad they get spanked. Animal or human! I don't care how everyone else feels about me doing this. I am a great home for him.

I came to this website to learn and figure out what was going on. Thank you to everyone that gave me suggestions and told me to change the litter. I have changed the litter and he is now using the litter box again!! YAAYY!

To everyone who judging me on how I discipline my animals and child, That will not make me change my mind about it. My animals will be good and so will my child!

Just because I spank them WHEN THEY ARE BAD does not mean I don't take amazing care of them. We make $1000 a month and we use the majority or it on my baby and fur babies! I have insurance on all of them, we only buy them the best food, and since i'm a stay at home mom I spend ALL day with them. I am a great parent.

oh Sarah we all belong here and all our opinions are important, thats how we all learn!!!!

We are all upset that the poster still believes that spanking is an option, when its not...we are doing our best to get her to try much better alternatives and our thinking is always in the animals best interests

believe me CML, there were times in my younger days when I shudder remember what I thought at the time was right.

I hope Tamera will be willing to try some alternatives and help her kitty out...and learn from us old cat ladies...:)

LOL! You and I are always on the same wavelength, ZQ. You most certainly can give me hell and I respect you and the other posters too much to ever disregard your opinion. I always am learning from this forum.

In this case I hope I have not read her behavior wrong. At least she has made every effort to explain herself further. I sure hope that means something.
Still love you ZQ!!!

I see a lot of red flags but I will keep my comments to myself and go back where I belong

All of us on this forum can state their opinions.  If we do not feel someone is doing right by their cat, we have every right to voice our opinions.

....and we are all entitled to our opinion, dominosarah.

I actually rarely disagree with any of the above posters, so it was a difficult post for me to write.

However I have heard some horrifying stories on here where I am ready to track down these people down and knock some sense into them--I guess, for me, I feel there is  hope for Tamera, and I encourage her to listen and learn from this forum.

Whoa!!!! Could we just step back a minute??

I am just as adamant as all of you about hitting an animal is abuse in our book.

Frankly, Tamera is 19---When I was 19 I still had a lot to learn about cats...but just as Tamera is doing I kept asking for advice. If I had been shut down when I stated the truth out of misinformation, I may never have learned anything about taking care of a cat, and continue to do all the wrong things.

I am the one that mentioned that Tamara should remember it is a baby and should give it the care shoe would a human baby. She was defending my assumption she did not have children.

God knows I hear some horrible things on this forum about how meaningless some people consider their cats to be, but Tamara seems to have been doing the best she knew how. She has Pet insurance --so she is insuring her animals are healthy to the best of her ability, and makes sure there are funds set aside for food, litter , etc.

In My Opinion only (and this may not sit well with the poster) but just because someone ,out of misinformation or the way they were taught , spanks there cat does not make them incapable of caring for an animal..
I would say she has had enough of our advice to know "spanking" is not the answer.

She came here willing to learn and we are treating her as if she is an Abuser and should relinquish all animals (does her child factor into this) immediately to allow them to have a better life than she can provide....and who says the next person wouldn't be the abuser.

Tamera was kind enough to take this baby in when she was in need. That is a good thing, please let us not make her feel like she has no right to have an animal or come her for advice.

Ok, Tamara, I may now be the one who takes the heat for this...but so be it!

CML

P.S. --If the above rant did not oust me  than maybe this will. You see when I was young I was also taught you spanked your kitty when they misbehaved---I am now a fierce advocate for animal rights, especially Cats--I wonder if I would have ever gotten this far if I had been shut down as soon as I said I spanked my cats. There, I confess I was a spanker--things were WaaaY different when I was growing up, and some have still not reached an enlightened state about MANY things. The World ***** in many ways!!

Hi Tamera,

The problem with kittens is they need a lot of attention in order to break them of bad habits. Normally their mom would do this.

Whenever your cat poops ao pees somewhere other than his litter box--all you have to do is pick him up and place him in the litter box--with some of his poo. That is the way cats learn.

A dog you can train a cat trains you. You have to work with them.

Example: You close your bedroom door at night. Cat does not like door closed, cat meows until YOU let him in--Now he knows all he has to do to get in a closed door is keep meowing---see he has trained you.

Soo what you have to do is encourage the good things --like treating him when he comes when you call, praising him when he uses the scratch pad instead of the sofa.

Cats will never learn anything from being hit --only to fear you and eventually he will start hiding from you. Trust me he may not be doing this now , but you've got a hiding, pooping cat in your future if you continue doing what your doing.

Just remember reward him when he does something you like and ignore him when he wants to get his way.

It is very kind that you took this little guy in--but remember they are like Baby responsibility. Need to see doctors when sick. Maybe the litter is something you need to change. Cats normally do not like scratching litter that is on metal like a pie plate.

Good Luck and keep asking for advice--that is what we are here for, K?

I have had kittens that I took in before. I have never had this problem. I spanked all of them when they didn't use the litter and they learned. So I know how to train a cat. Like I said in the other persons comments, I changed his litter box when he started missing it, so now it is an actual litter box but he refuses to use it. My boyfriend and do keep our door shut at night and he sleeps on his bed on the couch all night or until he is not tired and he plays around in the living room. He does not meow at my door because when he was a kitten and he did it, I spanked him and I taught him not to do it. And before you say anything about how I needed to keep make sure he was okay at night, I stayed up the first 3 nights with him to see his sleeping schedule. After those nights, I set the alarm clock, to his schedule and got up every 2 hours  when he woke up and fed him, played with him, and waited until he went to the bathroom. He would fall asleep and I would go to bed. I still wake up once a night to check on him. I'm a mother of a dog, a cat, and a baby. I know how similar they are as of taking care of them. I love my children and I take good care of them.

Every other day or every 2 days is not enough cleaning for a cat box.  It needs to be cleaned every day, otherwise the behavior will continue.

In all honesty, you should think about rehoming him.  You said you don't have much money.  What will you do if he gets sick and needs medical care?

I as soon as I got him I got him pet insurance. We pay that as well as every bills thats why we don't have much money. I also take out $30 out of my boyfriend check (every two weeks) so that we have money for food, litter, toys, and anything else that includes medical if the insurance won't pay for it. We have enough for him and ourselves.
And I haven't had to clean his litter box for a month because it is clean and he refuses to use it. He is small so he didn't poop a lot before all this

He will NOT learn from spanking EVER....he does NOT understand he is doing something wrong, all he gets from that is FEAR. Go back to the original tray guess he prefers that...

First of all please never spank your cat. This will only make your frightened and will make the situation worse . I agree with the other posters . Your cat is trying to tell you something . Also do you have other cats ? If you do , you need one litter box for each cat and they have to be cleaned regularly. If I understand you correctly , you say you put the cat around his or her poop and then spank him or her . This is very confusing for a cat .  The cat might think well I pooped my owner should be happy. The cat does not make the connection that he or she did something wrong and spanking a cat is never an option .  Cats have delicate bodies and spanking them could actually really hurt them.  I like Opus88's idea of picking up the poo let's say with a paper towel or kleenex and placing the poo in the litter box to show your kitty where it is supposed to be . How old is your cat ? Did you raise your cat from a kitten or it he or she a rescue cat ?  How about peeing ?  Is your cat peeing in the litter box ?  It sounds like this isn't an issue or you probably would have mentioned it in your initial post. You might also consider changing the type of litter you are using .  Also is the litter box big enough for your cat ?  Cats also have a very sensitive sense of smell and it is never a good idea to put his or her litter box anywhere near to where he or she eats or drinks .  Occasionally I might find a poop on the floor . I don't make a big deal about it because for the most part he poops in his litter box and sometimes he misses . I can't stress how important it is to make sure the litter box is clean.  Some cats will not go into a dirty litter box and they will poop on the floor because they are annoyed , but please never spank them as I stated earlier because it makes the situation worse , you could really hurt him or her and your cat will become frightened of you .  I hope I have given you some helpful insights and good luck with your kitty. You can solve this with patience and listening to your cat as cats are really intelligent and sensitive souls . Eve

Please don't "spank" your cat, they won't learn from you spanking them, instead they will probably fear you. Maybe purchase a different kind of kitty litter. How often do you clean it? i usually removed the poo's and wee's twice a day so it's super clean and i have had no issues whatsoever.

He is an only cat and he is 3 months old now so I didnt need to clean it that much but I cleaned it every 2 days. Like I explained to the people above you, He does not respond  to a firm no. Spanking him does not make him frightened of us. He is loving and cuddly and playful all the time but He does not respond to anything else. Nothing else I can do.

There is a litter additive called Cat Attract that would be worth a try too, for some reason kitty doesn't like the type of litter maybe??
Highly agree with zodiacs comments, please stop spanking your kitty this will never work, if fact it will make the problem worse
Also try picking up some of his poo and put it in the litter box, leave it in there...the scent of this will attract him

As I explained to the person above you, he does not respond to a firm no. He is stubborn and when he is in trouble I cannot just let him go with it. Especially since I am in an apartment that does not allow pets. He is staining my carpet. I never thought about the cat attract, Thank you for that idea!
IT doesnt matter ifa simple No is useless,Spanking him wont make things better- just more stressed and afraid of you.
Btw- mine doesnt respont to NO,nor spary , nor noise. But all I do is take her away from the places she not supposed to be
spray -s.of keyboard...

Instead of spanking your cat, try listening to him.  He is trying to tell you something.  First of all, how long has this been going on?  Anything changed in the house-new animals, new people, how many other cats do you have in the house, how often do you clean the litter box, and how many litter boxes do you have?

All of those could be issues your cat is having that's upsetting him enough to go outside the box.

PS-Please, don't hit a cat to discipline.  Cats are sensitive enough that a loud, firm "NO" should be enough to deter them.  Also, a bottle filled with water to squirt them or get a can/jar and fill it with coins and shake it when they start acting up.

He is an only cat that has been doing this for about a month. Nothing is new at all. I clean his litter box every other day before he started doing this. He was doing very good up until we switched his litter box (it was a pie tray first since I didnt have very much money and he needed a home) I only have one litter box and I put it in every spot he decides to start pooping in. I tried when he was younger not to spank him but as he gets older he is a lot worse and does nothing to a "firm no".
