Low ash in cat food

Low ash in cat food

My eldest male cat has a bad case of a urinary tract infection.  I would like to find a lower ash content cat food to start him on.

Hi,

Good idea.  The best food for your cat is a human- grade regiment that will be grain-free and low in sugars.  By Nature's Organic is a good one.  If you like, I'll give you a list of some others after I check with my husband (he's the expert on various food brands!).

Make sure you give both canned and dry, as cats dont' get enough hydration from dry food and drinking water - no matter how much water it looks like your cat drinks!  Dehydration, even mild dehydration, is one cause of conditions like UTIs.

Also, I'd consider giving your cat a dietary enzyme supplement to help him fully process anything in his food that might not be digesting properly.  This is very common as a cats natural diet in the wild is difficult to reproduce for domestic cats.

Also, try yucca extract powder. Not permanently, but temporarily along with his meds.  Yucca is a natural anti-biotic and anti-inflammatory and it can work wonders.  Those who know me around here, know I recommend it highly!  Fair warning, though, it apparently tastes awful, so don't put it on the food.  You'll have to put it in your cats mouth.

Good luck.
