My Cat Chews Phone Wires

My Cat Chews Phone Wires

I need help.  My four yr old neutered cat chews wires, especially phone wires and the wires that connect the computer modem.  Any ideas how I can stop him?  He doesn't eat them; he just chews them.  Sometimes I really think he does it for spite.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi, I've had many a cat do the wire chewing thing-scares me half to death-was scared to leave the house!  Thank God the one I have now isn't interested!  What's worked for me in the past were spraying with a water bottle(some water bottles you get the choice of "spray" or "stream"-use the "stream" more water comes out-cats hate that!)  The other suggestion-get a tin can or glass jar and put a bunch of coins in it and shake it when the cat gets obnoxious!  Many cats hate loud noises.

These ideas have worked for me, and I hope they work for you!  Hopefully, others will have some more ideas for you to try!

Hugs

I'd say do something fast. I've heard stories of cats getting electrocuted for chewing on wires. Last year, a member posted about her cat not moving and acting very lethargic, and also not wanting to eat. When the cat was taken to the vet, the diagnosis was electrocution/shock. The cat had been chewing wires, even in front of the owners, and nobody ever did anything to stop it, so I'm gad you are thinking of how to get rid of this behavior.

I myself do what zodiacqueen suggests to discipline Abby: spray kitty with water. Since you aren't always there to check if he is chewing the wire, you can always make sure to unplug and disconnect stuff to avoid an accident. I think that once you do the water spray 3 times, kitty will stop.

You can also try bitter apple. Just spray some bitter apple near where the wire is. Cats tend to dislike the smell of bitter apple and some people have had success with bitter apple as cat repellent.

Let us know how it goes yeah? Good Luck hun :)

Thank you for the suggestions. Anakin would probably like the taste of bitter apple  = (

I had no idea that Ani chewing wires was so dangerous and appreciate you mentioning it.

For now, we put the wires through the round cardboard center found in paper towels.

Also heard there metal "tubes" to keep cats and kids away from wires.

Ani thanks you for your advice and wants to know when you are sending his treats lol

The metal covers you can get them at Walmart or Home Depot. It actually is a good idea to cover the wires.

A zibillion treats for Ani, the big fluffy fella  :) so that he keeps getting bigger lol

My cat chewed every electrical wire in my house. I finally duct taped the cords to the wall so she couldn't get at them. Where they stuck out from the outlets, I screwed one of those disposable aluminum pans over the outlet and the plugs. They can be painted, decorated, or hidden behind something, but she can't get at the wires any more. Ta Dah!

There are sprays specifically designed for cats and dogs to prevent them from chewing certain house objects. It is dangerous for him to be chewing on wires and needs to be stopped apart from the fact it would be costing You a lot of money.
You can buy these sprays from pet store outlets.
