My cat, The Mary, is 18 and has urinated in her bed....

The Mary is a petite little thing at about 5 lbs. or so.  I know she is old, doesn't have many teeth, nor can she hear, but she always seems happy (always purring) and is content, eats, drinks, and uses the litter box regularly as far as I can tell.  But today I noticed that she had mucus coming out of her nose AND her left eye.  The nose thing comes around every few months and the vet gives her a couple of shots and she's good to go.  But today her eye was all gooey and when I picked her up out of her bed to clean it up I noticed that she had soiled her bed.  She loves her bed and is always in her bed so I was very surprised.  I had to bath her and throw out the stinky bed.  I made her a new bed and bundled her all up.  She's purring and the eye seems a bit better now.  Still, I'm wondering if this is a sign that she's really starting to go downhill?  I can't get her to the vet until Friday afternoon at the earliest.  In the meantime, I'm looking for some insight.  Anyone?

Thanks for the feedback.  The Mary has always had chunky and large black eye boogies, but this recent bit of greenish goo looked more like the think mucus coming out of one side of her nose.

Anyways, she seems better today in that department, but I do fear she is failing.  This morning for a few seconds I thought she had passed away when she did not respond immediately to my petting her.  Then she woke up, but she was very week and she did wet her newly made up bed again last night.  She also seems a bit bonier than usual too.

this morning I put down some puppy pads on top of another newly made up bed, but it looks like she has wet it a little already.

I'm definitely taking her in to the vet as soon as I can.

hi and welcome, Mary could very well be just leaking urine, the bladder becomes harder to control these leaks with loss of nerve impulses as they(and we) age....or she could well have a blockage in her urinary tract d/t crystals at her age...if there is a blockage going on than small amounts of urine could overflow and leak...does she appear to be in pain? are you absolutely certain she is peeing normally in her litter box except for this one time??
It sure would be a good idea to take her to a Vet for a check up and be sure they do a urinalysis on her too...
the mucus is likely a herpes virus, buy her some L-lysine avail at human health food stores or from your Vet...this is an amino acid supplement to strengthen her immune system and works very well for the controlling the virus in the eyes especially.
best of luck to poor Mary, she's done well to reach a grand age of 18 but now will need extra help to keep her older years as comfortable and pain free as possible.
Please keep us posted!!!  ((♥))

I don't know that I'd worry too much about the eye and nose boogers as those are something my furkids all get on a daily basis. If she did however soil her bed it could be a sign that she's losing her competency ability. I think you should be okay until you can get her into the vet but I would definitely call them back and let them know about this part if you didn't mention it when you made the appointment. Good luck :)
