My cat has blood in stool (black) and throwing up pinkish blood

Took Bobo to the vet around 7 months ago, with symptoms of throwing up blood and bloody diarrhea , when he has these spells which are usually every 6 weeks or so, he acts like he wants to eat ,but turns it down, then comes the throwing up of watery pinkish to red blood and bloody diarrhea . The vet prescribed hills d/d duck and green pea diet along with a probiotic . He got better and began eating with the others ( I have 3 other inside kitties that I feed pro plan )  . But like I said he seems to have a cycle , and that came back .The vet was hesitant to diagnose him with IBD but thought maybe his opening to his stomach was too small and when he ate it caused irritation , which caused him to regurgitate blood and then swallow it causing the problems . 2 months ago my outside cat got a respiratory inf that the inside kitty's got, $650 later everyone was fine except Bobo , I didn't think he was gonna make it , luckley I took him to a new vet that gave him a 14 day Atb shot and he made it . Butt now 2 months later we are back to the same old problems , sorry this post is so long I just wanted to give as much information as I could . The last time after he got over his resp that he went through , it actually took about a week for him to eat ! Just want to know if anyone  has anyone else has had this happen or any advise? Different diet ?

Hi C103,

I, Like Opus, do not have a great deal of experience with the bloody stool/vomitus condition. If I may ask---does Bobo go outside or is he inside only?/ If he does go outside, I would not allow this until he becomes more stable. God knows what they eat and can pick up out there.

It sure sounds like IBD , but your vet needs to do a complete CBC and , as Opus suggested. a ultrasound or MRI--G=definitely an X-ray of the stomach and intestines. I wonder why , not having done these your vet would rule out IBD.

Bobo could have developed an ulcer which needs to be monitored for foods that will irritate this. I so agree about Convenia--it is the Devil in disguise.

Please make sure after Bobo has one of these episodes you hold back food and water for 24 hrs. Water can be give by placeing an ice cube in a dish an allowing him to like it. Any further food or excess gulping of water will continue to irritate his stomach

Bottom line here--go back to the vet and have him give you a definitive diagnosis. Vomiting and bloody diarrhea ha is a SYMPTON of a medical disorder. You need to find out what that disorder is in order to stop this .

Bobo has something going on with him --that is why he took longer to recover from a simple viral infection.

Good Luck ,
Please update us, K?

hi and welcome, sorry for Bobo's troubles, can't say we've ever run across this on this site..and I know I haven't personally myself

I can comment on diet....I think the Vets thinking is right in that regards, its best to feed Bobo a novel protien with very few if any carbs...I'm just not a fan of Hills or any other prescription diet, you can buy other brands cheaper and best stick to one with NO carbs...visit a good pet store and they will have lots to choose from.

also a warning abt the injectible antibiotics (Convienia)...there have been many sick cats and dogs from this and even a some deaths....some pets have a reaction to it and it takes so long to clear from the system, so beware!!!

I think the only way to truly find out what Bobos troubles are is with an ultrasound or mri of his stomach and intestine. but if it can be managed by diet that would sure be the easiest and cheapest way to treat...sure hope you can find something that agrees with him and helps him overcome whatever this is

good luck and keep us posted please
