Neutered Male Cat - Complications?

My sister recently took a young male cat to the vet to get it neutered. The cat is approximately 8 months old. She dropped him off and they later called and said the cat's testes had not descended yet and that they had to go "fishing" for them. They didn't tell her anything more at that time other than he had done fine in the surgery. She picked him up and they told her that she had to put an infant's onsie (shirt thingy) on him and keep him penned up for two weeks until the sutures could be removed. They emphasized that he needed to be kept quiet. When she got him home there was a three inch incision on his abdomen and a one inch incision where his testes were. She followed their instructions keeping him in a large dog kennel about 3 feet high and wide and 4 feet long. I'm a nurse so she asked if I would remove the sutures. I went to look at him and she let him out of the kennel - he can't walk or bear weight on his left back leg. He's been out of the kennel for about 12 hours and it's the same. Also, I believe the left side of the incision may be herniated as there's a soft bulge. I did not remove the sutures. We do not have a 24 hour clinic in our local area or he'd be there now. My question is - I've heard nothing but bad about the vet she took him to (in fact I wanted her to take him to one that's in my town, several miles away). Do these sound like normal complications of neutering? Or should she look at getting him to another vet?

What you describe is horrible. Poor kitty. I personally have never heard of such complications. In fact, neutering a cat should be quick and painless, easy as pie. Neutering, as you may already know, is much easier than spaying, and the cat is usually fine the next day or so. Sounds a little odd that at 8 months, the cat's testes were yet to get down, but it does happen. Your sister may want to check with another vet, especially if this one does not have a good reputation. I think it'd be safe to do this before bigger issues like more infection take place. I just don't think this is right.
