Petey is going bald!

Petey does not have mites or fleas but he has lost a brother in the past few months.  He now will only eat dry food, he use to eat wet food with his brother. He's licking all his rear end fur off.  Looks like he has tights on! I can't get omega 3 into him, he won't even eat sardines!  Can't give him a bath either!  i don't know how to help him!  Please help me!

29 SG asked me to stop by...

It sounds like Petey is missing his brother, to state the obvious...

In my pictures area you will see Calamity Jane Grey; she was with us for most of her 21+ years.  You will also see Queen Victoria Grey (Cammie's sister) and Cerridwen Blythe (Cammie's other long time companion.

Victoria and Cerridwen died within a couple of months of each other, leaving Cammie alone at 17 1/2.  We waited a couple of weeks to see how she would be by herself, and then got her a kitten (Silver Kestrel the Ransacker ,-).  The next year I got another kitten from the same woman with whom I worked (Hildiekatt Halfshadow the Harrier, Kessie's 1/2 sister) and then the next came Chesapeake Bandylegs the Hunter (as you can see, I am fond of excess in naming cats).

Cammie definitely perked up from having company and it took 2 strokes about 2 weeks apart to do her in...

If you do a search for Teia in the Cats Forum, you'll see my tale of rehabbing and "working in" an older cat to the existing clowder.

Teia was a rescue from the streets by the folks from whom we got her.

Persistent kindness and gentle discipline are the keys to adding any new cat to the  household.

It sounds like Petey could use an older, gentle cat as a "George" to his "Lenny."

If you have a Petsmart in the area, they do a superb job of working with local shelters vis a vis kitties (Chessie came to us via Petsmart).

I know and believe that cats, being predators by nature, have more a sense of things about them than the other animals with whom we share our lives.  Though dogs, being descendants of wolves, as pack animals, come close to feline emotional intuition I think.

Here's the URL for one of the photos in my Cats album...

Teia is on my wife's lap and Hildie is on the floor next to them.

Teia bit and scratched us when she first arrived and charged the other cats; she was a rescued street cat, still a bit feral.  We took her in when her previous people lost their home to foreclosure.

Your Petey can be helped, and can have a friend again...time, patience, kindness.

Take care and let us know how Petey does.

It may well be stress, but since the excessive licking seems to be primarily on his back end, I wouldn't rule out either intestinal parasites and/or sensitivity to litter.  Even if you haven't changed the type of litter he is using, combined with the stress and/or parasites, it could be irritating him now even if it wasn't in the past.

I also agree that he probably needs a new companion.  Any shelter or rescue group should let you bring Petey to pick out his own companion.  Keep in mind though, that it is some what of an artificial environment and the added stress of travel to the shelter may make him less than enthusiastic about other cats initially.  I would also ask about fostering a cat and then if it works out between the two of them, you can adopt the cat.

Thx Lois...

You know what is going on w/Petey.  He needs a new 'brother' or 'mom' type kit who will take control, without displacing.

Wonder if you and Petey could visit Humane Society together.  I'd like NancyJac to weigh in on this.  She works as a volunteer at shelter.  Knows all the ins and outs of finding appropriate companions for lone kits.

Pip also might have suggestions as he and his wife have had great luck adding grown cat to their family.

But....big 'but' here...if you really can't afford another pet, vet may have suggestion on meds to help him adjust.

Re: medication...here I go ...out on my limb...have friend who has given her elderly dog a bit of xanax when needed. He was super stressed at the death of her husband.

Big cuddles/scritches to Petey, and my prayers to you for resolution to this worrisome issue.

I'm sure it's not allergies and that it is due to depression.  He is loved all the time and treated like a king!  Petey is a bit retarded and his brother, Niko was his guardian.  I've tried giving him childrens bennadryl but it hasn't helped.  My poor boy.  I feel so bad for him!  I really shouldn't get another cat but I'm thinking I may have to to help Petey.
thank you for responding.  I'll keep you informed.  lois

My thoughts are that Your kit is stressed and missing his brother.  Allergies are usually the first thing we think of with excessive licking/scratching, but considering that he is turning his nose up at food he used to eat with his brother....could be grief.

I believe cats like humans can suffer a variety of emotional reactions to a change as huge as losing a brother.  My only experience with this occurred when I adopted a kitten who couldn't handle living without litter mate or other cats.  He finally took off, and is living with neighbors who have older cats to keep him company. He had almost completely licked the fur on back legs off: was on Wellness kitten wet food.....so should have been thriving.

If he were mine, I would probably take to vet to be sure allergies were not culprit.

All you can do after that is give him lots of love: I know there are many cat owners who can afford to get another cat after one dies.   This can work or not.  It is a risk and an expense.  Am sure you have already thought of this option.

Do keep us posted.  Hope things return to normal soon.
