Ok, tried your suggestions. The cat jumps out when you put him in the litter box.... I have observed him sitting and licking on the female when SHE is in the litter box...
He is still peeing on the floor...
Can you recommend something to deter him from going back to the same spots, like some spray or something?
Let me know how it goes. When a cat jumps right out, it usually means he feels like he/she isn't allowed or welcome there. It could be an attitude expressed by the other cat to subtle for people to pick up, or just that he's instinctively picking up on a "dominant scent" and respecting it. It's classic behavior in a cat who is new to a household.
It's a hard problem to deal with. You can't reason with them, after all!
I'd suggest trying getting a second box, and putting it in a bathroom where the older cat isn't allowed in as an experiment. Lock the other cat in around when you think it has to "go". If it's totally new (the box) and the litter is fresh/new too, then he should use it without problem (might take a try or two, but usually first time's the charm!) It's a good way to find out if this is the problem. If the other cat uses it at all before the new one, it will ruin the "experiment" however!
Lets try ruling this out first, see how it goes before we get into anything else...
Yes, we are using natures miracle and integrity brand cat litter.....and we actually only have 2 cats. I have not noticed any aggressive behavior around in or around the litter box...but he does jump out right away when I put him in the box. And he never doodoo's anywhere but the box. Also, the cat boxes are regulation size and are cleaned regularly and have plenty of litter.
The female was in the house first and is 2 years old. She 'tolerates' the new little guy fairly well but is usually extremely independant and does not want to be bothered by him or us....until evening when they play chase. One thing I have noticed is that he is a follower and not a leader, and if he learned anything from the female, it was from watching. Another thing, he was peeing on the bed (what a nightmare) but has stopped, and now crawls under the sheet to sleep the day away.
Now, there is another male cat who strolls in alot and just has to use the litter box while he is visiting, but they dont fight over it to my knowledge. I will try putting him in the box when the female is in there that will be interesting.........
Huh, I'm assuming you're using one of those special odor remover's like nature's miracle. (you did mention it. If it's not from a pet store, it probably doesn't work well).
You mentioned you have two other cats, can you tell if they're aggressive at all, even in mood, if he goes in the litter box? You may not even be aware of it. What happens if you put him in the litter box, does he jump out quickly or just kind of meander about and leave at his own pace? If he does it quickly, he's either having a reaction/dislike to the litter brand, or whether or not the other cats are actually threatening him, he may be afraid to pee in the box the more alpha cats use.
Try putting him in the litter box one one of the other cats are in it, even using it. See how he reacts. See how the OTHER cats react. The problem with kittens being brought into a household is if there isn't a cat there willing to teach him proper behavior, it's kind of on it's own. Some of it's instinctual, but there are degrees to this instinctual behavior that have to be learned socially from an adult cat.
I have over the years traced down 80% of litter box behavioral problem to this social issue thing (mostly males in this case). There's others, of course, but outside of litter type (always clumping! Decent brand), box size, or some rare behavioral disorder do to an illness it's usually some form of this.
He does defecate in the box, right? It's just peeing? That's a bit funny, because it's usually the other way around (not always, though). Let me know about what I asked and we'll see what we can dig up for an answer.
