Upsetting For Me When Visiting Vet With My Cat

Do other people get really upset when they have to take a much loved pet to the vets?  My memory of the vet I visited with my cat today was having my dear little dog put down there, and when I went into the same surgery, it was so heart wrenching.

I was already distraught as my cat Smudge was poorly.  He had not eaten for a few days, and was very listless, slept all the time, and I knew something was wrong.  He goes out a lot, and there have been reports from neighbours that he was fighting other cats at night.

Yes, it probably was due to a fight.  His temperature was very high, and the vet suspects he had an infection from a cat bite, although no evidence could be found of this.  He has been given an anti biotic injection, and an anti inflammatory injection, and should make a full recovery.  Oh, but the heartache of seeing a pet ill, and having to take him to the vets.  More than my old heart can stand!!  (Oh and the cost too!!!!)

Thank you all for your posts.  Nursegirl thank you so much for your lovely message.  Yes dear Smudge means the world to me.

There was no obvious sign of a wound but I am happy to say Smudge has made a full recovery.  Just as well because I get in an awful state about anything as I suffer anxiety and depression.  I got into such a state over this.

My lovely boy is his old self again, and has been especially close since the incident.

Oh Maddie, I hear ya.  I get stressed out taking any of my fur babies to the vet.  Even just to see them nervous and uneasy bothers me.  Of course, I know that the whole point of going to the vet is to keep them healthy and well, but it's still rough to see our babies uncomfortable.

I'm so glad your sweet Smudge is going to be okay!  I know how much you love that cat!  I love the pictures of him, he's a sweetie.  Lots of love and well wishes for Smudge!  And for YOU!  XOXO

Yes, it is very upsetting taking one of our babies to the vets.  It's always stressed me out(and the cat, I'm sure).  I would especially get paranoid when they had my 17 yr old in the back too long getting blood work.  God forbid if they had her back there for more than 15 min.  I would send someone back there to check on her.  LOL

Hope your baby gets well soon.  Any way you can limit his time outdoors to try to prevent some fights?

Lovely post, Eve.  I think I misunderstood the point of what Maddie was trying to convey.

Hi Maddie,

I understand what you were saying about earlier in your comments.
I am still going to the same vet that put one of my other cats to sleep when she was diagnosed with cancer. My husband and I actually still go into that same room at the veterinary clinic with our present kitty where our other cat was put to sleep. It's hard because I can still see our former kitty in my mind's eye sitting on that same examination table. I have thought of changing vets, but our vet is very good and our cat really likes her.
So I wanted to tell you that I understand what you mean when you say you went into the same surgery and it was heart wrenching because I feel the same way when I walk into the examination room with our current kitty called Sammy knowing this was the room where I had to say goodbye to our dear little girl not more than four years ago. I put up with the uncomfortable feeling I always get when I enter that room because I know our Sammy is getting excellent care from a very experienced and very kind vet.  I'm glad to hear that your kitty Smudge is feeling better and I wish both of you well.  Eve ( mother of Sammy the cat )

Hi Maddie, I do know what you mean.  It is so upsetting to see our babies (or anyone's) suffer in any way.

I'm a little unclear from your post, but does Smudge have an abscess you can see, or did the Vet just guess?  I'm wondering if the antib injection was Convenia???  If so, please keep a close eye on your boy as there can be complications with this drug.

I hope you Both are recovering from your ordeal.  :)

p.s. I'm so sorry, I wrote this response last night, then musta forgot to hit send!
