Very sick kitty!

Hello, I have an 18 year old kitty who has been healthy her whole life, except for the past few months.  I did not provide my cat with dental care, and due to the condition of her back teeth, the vet recommended that I have them removed. But due to the incredibly high cost, I'm not sure if this is possible for me in the near future.  I've spent over $2000 in the last few months for treatment for an upper respiratory infection, followed by multiple urine infections, x-rays, blood work, lab work, etc.

She has been on Clavamox practically non-stop for a few months for these infections, as well as her teeth.  Besides the chronic infections, she has been losing weight rapidly.  She has lost over 20% of her body weight in about 3 weeks, and is continuing to lose weight.  The vet felt that this was due to the medication.  Every time she goes to the vet, (about every 2 weeks) she needs multliple iv's due to dehydration, as well as urine tests.

If I take her off the medication so that she can gain weight (she does eat normally when not on the medication), then her urine infections will persist and spread to her kidneys, yet if I continue the medication, she will waste away.  She weighed just over 6 lbs. a week ago, but it is obvious she has lost more.

Would the best thing for her be to put her down? I really dont want to, but I'm worried about her quality of life.  Is there anything I can do?

Hi,

Hopefully, it isn't too late for the cat. Check this link out. It is one of our Health Pages created by ZodiacQueen in an effort to help with your situation that you aren't able to afford vet care.

Good Luck.

First off, Clavamox is WELL known to make cats sick to their stomachs.  There is an alternative antibiotic called Baytril.  I don't understand why your vet would not suggest that!  Some of my cats haven't been able to deal with clavamox either!

If your cat's got some bad teeth, it might be very painful for her to eat.  If it's possible in any way, I'd really try to get her teeth cleaned or those bad teeth removed.  That would really improve her quality of life.

Does she have any other conditions besides a bladder and respiratory infection?
