Why is my 16 year old cat suddenly so affectionate?

I had two neutered males cats that grew up together; they were brothers from the same litter. I had to have one put to sleep in January because of abdominal lymphoma. In the last two months, the one that I still have just seems to want to be with me constantly and meows demandingly if he's not in visual distance of me. If I put him the the upstairs hallway when I am in the bedroom, he just scratches and meows at the door. If I let him in the bedroom, he jumps up on the bed and gets right in my face. I thought he may be because he misses his brother, but they didn't get along that well and often had scraps. Any opinions?

Hello debodun.
I'm so sorry about your kitty's passing.

Your other kitty is displaying exactly the same symptoms that my kitty Sookie is since her brother passed onward 6 months ago.  She is his littermate.  They had spats too and he was a very jealous cat.  Didn't want to share my spouse with her at all.  Now Sookie is all over her, yells at her, needs love & attention amost constantly. She needs my love & attention too but I'm rejected if my spouse walks in, unless she's angry at her for leaving the house, etc.  We would never dream of shutting her out of a room -- couldn't bear the anticipated scratching and other noises.

We've given her everything she demands and now she's a teeny bit better in that she will go enjoy other parts of the house alone when she wants too.

Bottom line your kitty misses her friend and loved him dearly no matter the cat spats.  She doesn't understand why you, probably, took him to the vet one day & didn't bring him home.

You need to share your grief with him, get some catnip, some new toys, anthing else to help him along.  Crepe paper is a great kitty toy especially with a laser light on it.  Thay have automatic laser lights but you have to punch the button to restart it every 20 minutes.

Love him lots, pet him lots. I wish you and him the best.

Blessings,

  Melinda

Dear debodun,

I didn't mean to say "crepe" paper in my answer.  I meant to say tissue paper.

Blessings,
