Hi
I’d like a second opinion concerning a treatment given to my girlfriends cat. The cat is a small female about a year and a half old, suffering from a patch of dry skin on her neck. To treat this the vet administered two shots. One was cortisone, which I gather is standard treatment for skin complaints.
The other (that I found strange) was some kind of behaviour altering hormone supposedly to reduce stress? Im afraid I don’t have the name.
The result of this treatment is that the cat has become withdrawn, inactive and reluctant to eat. A marked difference from her previous outgoing and active behaviour. Yesterday (2 weeks on) my girlfriend contacted the vet who seemed at a loss to explain the lack of appetite, even saying cortisone tends to illicit the opposite effect. He then gave the cat another shot, this time antibiotics.
The cat remains inactive and lacking in appetite.
Being a cat owner all my life these treatments struck me as somewhat overzealous, but I put that down to the difference in veterinary practices in the UK and Australia (where she is). I wondered if anyone could shed some light on this, in particular I can’t find any information about hormone based behaviour modification in cats?
I should add the cat is spayed and inoculated.
Thanks
