(Oh, the reason I mentioned the other cats and the dog is because it sounds like he is lonely, when he is doing it.  He puts his HEART into it.  But he's not lonely!)

While I agree a vet check is a good idea, I have a cat who is not yet two years old and can see just fine, who every night goes up into the landing of the part of our house that is tall and open, and yowls like he is bereft.  We have other cats with whom he plays, and a small dog with whom he plays also (ambush and pounce).  I used to have a female cat who would do this also in the same place in the house, and back then wrote it off to some residual memory of being in heat before she was spayed.  But now I think it's just showing off and saying they exist.  Not to say your boy shouldn't be seen! but it's funny that my young vibrant cat is doing the same darn thing.

Hello patches31445,

I agree with opus88. I think it would be wise to take your darling 16 year
old kitty for a checkup at your vet. There are a number of different kinds
of meows. I know. We have a male ginger cat whose going on 8 years old
this year. He has a number of different meows too depending on what his
needs are. Cats don't just meow for nothing. Anyway, please take your
precious kitty for a vet check.

Hi I agree with Opus. My kitty Beener does the same thing he is 17yrs old. Beener is going senile. He howls some nights all night long. If everything has been ruled out and he continues it could be a sign of dementia. The best thing you can do is just reassure him when he is doing this and I will try to engage Beener in a light activity/play. He loves his monkey and If I start tossing that around he will stop. play and then get worn out and fall asleep. Its also important to not move the water/food bowls or litter box to different spaces as this confuses my Beener. Sometimes he will stand at the wall and howl. Beener does a lot of his howling at night as well. Like 2am!

well your kitty is certainly now a very senior boy, whens the last time he's had a Vet check? Cats are like us and when they reach old age many health problems can rear up....especially urinary tract infections mainly 'crystals' with male kitties...these can be very painful and perhaps thats why he's telling you he's in some pain.
I would really suggest him seeing a Vet asap especially for a urinalysis...good luck♥
